Will I lose my financial aid if I drop a class?

I have been taking an anatomy class and my teacher is almost impossible to please
I have ADHD and it holds me back from alot and the way his test are..i have failed my first 2 tests
There has already been 5 ppl out of my class drop and I am really debating it.
I have tried really hard and I dont know if I can keep on taking this course with this teacher
If I withdraw this class, would I lose the financial aid? I have already used some to pay for classes and books and other college expenses, would I have to pay it back??
I just dont know the consequences of withdrawing a class.

btw..its before midterm, therefore it shouldnt count againts me

There are a couple of ways of answering this question, and the correct answer depends on the type of financial aid that you are receiving.

If you applied for financial aid as a full-time student, your first concern would be that dropping the anatomy class might drop you below the (12?) credit hours that you need to be considered a full-time student. Some forms of financial aid offer awards based on your classification - so dropping below full-time may make you ineligible for some of the aid that you have already received.

Even more troubling - and something you need to investigate - if you used a Pell Grant to pay for your tuition, you will almost certainly be required to refund some of those Pell Grant funds to your school.

When a student drops a course that was paid for with a Pell Grant, the Department of Education requires the school to calculate what portion of the grant was "earned". The remainder is "unearned", and the school must return your unearned funds to the Department. The rules of the financial aid system require that the school bill you for the majority of any funds they must return to the government.

The calculation is a little complicated, but basically, the school will compute what percentage of the semester you have completed. For instance, if you turn in your "drop" paperwork on the 30th day of a 150 day semester, you will have completed 30/150 or 20% of the course. That would mean that 20% of your Pell grant was earned, and the other 80% would be "unearned". Your school would return almost 80% of the course fee to the government, and bill you for most of that money.

You are not necessarily required to repay the money all at once, but you must at least come to an agreement with the school about a repayment plan. If you haven't repaid the money or begun making payments on the payment plan, you will be ineligible to receive future financial aid until you have.

Finally - if you paid for the course with loans, there is no way to get a refund at this point in the semester. Even if you drop the class, you'll still wind up paying full-price for it, just like if you had paid for the course with cash out of your own pocket.

My advice to you is to stop by or call the financial aid department and speak to a counselor. They will be able to review your student account and let you know if, and how much you might be required to repay. Unfortunately for financial aid applicants, the decision to drop a course is more complicated than it is for students who pay out of pocket.

Good luck to you - if you stick it out with anatomy, I hope you pull through!
