What can I do about this?

I'm a highly respected student in my school (both by teachers and students) but that has been shot down quite a bit.

Two things involved with this situation:
1. I created a "blackboard" type of system for my AP World History class. Students would upload answers to homework, we use this source if we cannot find the answer. (Our teacher does not check homework for accuracy, so this helps us with learning)
2. Recently, a student leaked the system (which was a gmail account) to my teacher, she was not appreciative. Furthermore, a student copy and pasted my homework. I was unaware of this, and got caught for 'cheating'.

I do not refute the cheating, or the 'deserving' the zero my teacher gave.

However:
My teacher has told fellow teachers and her student aids (whom were eleventh and twelfth graders) that I developed a massive cheating system and was 'holding the weight of the class on my shoulders' because I make study guides for test, and contributed frequently to the blackboard.

How should I address the situation?

Thus far, I have not been able to explain myself to my teacher, and thus the information she has stated has most likely been skewed quite far from the truth.

so one zero on a homework isn't a big deal dude, if you want to get on the teachers good side then just take it. If you fight him on the zero then he will focus on you all year. like the girl above me said, call a meeting and apologize and say you were wrong and how the teacher is right and how you deserve your punishment and blah blah. adults love to hear that you "learned your lesson" and you understand that they are "top dog" and they LOVE to hear that they're right and you're wrong and a total moron. just make him feel good about himself and a few homework sheets later and a quiz and maybe a test and your grade should shoot right up.

It sounds as if your intentions were good but that you may have inadvertently started a system that the teachers feel contributed to cheating. I would call a meeting with your parents, teachers, principal, and counselor. Let them know all about your program, how it was used, what information you could find, etc. Apologize to everyone and let them know that nothing like that will happen again. Good Luck!

You posted earlier about this and I gave a lengthy reply. Of course you left out quite a bit of the above information in your first post.

Why did you set up this system "on the sly?" This automatically makes you suspect in the teacher's eye, not to mention the administration. In your first post it sounded like you were trying to help your fellow student and he copied your work (although at the time I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't think he would copy it, but simply learn from it). Of course he was a fool to copy it verbatim for an AP History class because discovery was inevitable!

Your omission of the above info from your first post made it sound like your teacher had completely blown the situation out of proportion due to the fact that one student copied your homework. However, you have set up what many will perceive as "a cheating board." Indeed, I've seen similar cases where students were *expelled from college for doing the same thing you did*. The fact that you didn't share this information with the teacher in advance lends credence to her position that you knew that what you were doing was wrong.

Now... all of that being said... I think that if you had set up something similar to what you did *with the teacher's guidance and administration approval* would have been a great idea. I'm guessing you think that they would never go along with the idea (being atavistic educators with 19th or 20th Century thinking). You very well might be right, they might never have approved the idea. That would have been a mistake on their part. They could have and should have been involved with such a project, which would allow them to have guidelines for posting, responding, with a strong warning against plagiarism. Chances are though that they aren't that tech savvy and wouldn't know how to monitor your board or how to approach the situation.

What they fail to realize is that students share work *all the time*. They're usually not foolish enough to copy homework (I'm somewhat dumbfounded that your peer did so in your AP class). Students often learn best from their peers and educators should do everything to facilitate student learning. The 21st Century affords us new tools which make this easier (and possibly more productive), but as you have learned, more dangerous to do. What goes on the Net *stays on the Net* (and doesn't disappear)!

I still believe what I said in my response to your original post. You really need to sit down with your teacher and principal about this. You've taken your school into the 21st Century, but you have made mistakes along the way. This should have been a collaborative project from step one. All parties involved need to go back to that step. If you and the faculty at your school would like my help with this, I have over 10 years experience facilitating online learning and supporting both educators and students.

you should make an appointment to speak directly with your teacher about this, and be completely honest with your teacher about your intentions and the use of this system. maybe even show it to the teacher and explain it to him or her. if you are up front and honest about it, your school should be more lenient in how they deal with the issue.

I assume they may want to punish you if they suspect that you have been cheating, especially on a large scale. maybe cheating was not your intention, but you can't expect the other students to be honorable and have good intentions just because you do.

this is just life... people will find a way to cheat, steal, or lie to get what they want the easy way. It sounds like you unintentionaly opened a door to cheating. of course someone would copy and past your homework answers. if they can find a way to do it, they will. it looks like you could be in deep doo doo with your school if you don't talk to your teacher and deal with it asap. good luck
