There is a chance the baby might not even have it. Was the baby born vaginally or c-section? With a c-section, there is a small chance of being HIV infected. With a vaginal birth, the infection rate is higher.
Treatment is usually not started until blood tests come back with unusual findings. Meaning...when you start to become UNhealthy. That is when the medicine needs to be started. The medicine at this time will keep you healthy.
You will always be HIV positive, even when you are on medication, BUT the medication can slow down or stop the virus from taking over.
Most people with HIV can expect to live long lives as long as they take there medications...that is when the doctor tells them it is time to start taking medication.

If you've tested HIV+ you should talk to your doctor about HIV and the risks for your baby. Your doctor won't be able to tell right now if your baby was infected with HIV, but he or she can talk to you about how to keep your baby safe (no breastfeeding!) and when to get the testing done.

You should have been tested during the pregnancy, if not the baby should have been tested at birth. Talk with your doctor and the baby's pediatrician.
