Any way to skip taking math classes for general studies?

i'm a sophomore at a good community college. i'm following an outline of a variety of courses to take to fulfill the general education direction thanks to a good counselor i met up with. i'm good in english, history, and the arts (like writing poetry). i love to read, so i'm also good in literature. i like science somewhat. math though is my weakest subject. i just found out i failed my prealgebra class (here they call it MA 091) for the 2nd time. the first time i took it during the summer and the professor and class altogether was horrible. i don't slack off so i always do my work and i don't miss classes. the 2nd time, i took it in a regular semester (not summer) and it was slower and the work load wasn't heavy either.

the gen ed here requires math 110 which is statistics. i have tried tutors in the past and it doesn't work. it's like i can never get math to register in my head. i have some financial problems too (financial aid doesn't work for us) and i don't want my mom to waste the money she pays for my classes. i do good on the homeworks, but when it comes to quizzes, tests or exams, i do horrible. so my question is, does anyone know, have skipped taking math classes or might have taken a class for those who are just not good at math and still received a good education and gotten a good job without having to take math?

also, i still haven't decided on a set major, cause i keep changing my mind. i know it's not set in stone, but i'm starting to give up. i'm starting to feel wasteful and stupid for not passing this math class. any help would be appreciated and please no dumb answers. thanks.

it's pre-algebra taught at the college level. it's not 8th grade math.

Most of the time one has to pass all the gen. ed. classes. I am like you, math in itself makes no sense to me at all, now if it is in chemistry or biology I understand it pretty well oddly enough. Go see an adviser at your college, there could be another way of getting the credit without taking algebra. I ended up taking general statistics and intro to logic in place of college algebra. Now that was far from easy and it took 2 classes to replace that one class but algebra, I just did not get it. So there could be other ways you just need to talk to an adviser at the college. You do need to pick a major that is one reason you feel like your not going anywhere, you're not working towards a degree. That can cause you to feel not motivated and you could end up giving up and your grades will show it. Hey it happened to me when I was going. Once you pick a major it will give you more structure and make you feel like you are moving forward and not standing still. Like you said if you end up not liking it you can always change it.

As far as i know, you HAVE to take a math class to get any kind of bachelor's or associate's degree. i've never heard of any college that doesn't make you take one. i feel your pain!!! i'm a junior in college and am fixing to take a psych stats class that i really dread.

You do know there are almost no jobs for a general studies major. And without the math that is about all you are ever going to be. You need math as math teaches you how to think logically.

The only way I can think of to get out of the math requirement is to pass the necessary CLEP test, but if you're failing pre-algebra there's no way you'd pass. This is college - simply showing up to class isn't enough. You need to demonstrate you understand the material. Pre-algebra is 8th grade math; you shouldn't have been able to finish high school without it and you certainly can't earn a college degree without it. You'll probably still have to pass College Algebra before you can take statistics.

You need to change your approach to the class. Do all the homework, and then redo it when you get it back to make sure you understood what you got wrong. Do extra problems for practice. Ask your professor as soon as you don't understand something, not the day before the exam or worse, after. Don't take another summer session of it; it's the same material crammed into half the time or less. There's got to be something you're missing - sit down with the professor and find out where you're going wrong, what you're missing, and how to catch up.

1. Get your college booklet that lists all the classes offered and what level they are etc. Look at the freshman level to see what is available.

2. Find out who is head of the math department and discuss your issue with them and see what they suggest. Sometimes you can take a class at another college and have it transferred to the collage you plan to graduate from.

3. You might check with the high school you graduated from. There are usually classes offered at high school that also counts as collage credit. These are likely freshman classes and more basic. Your old high school counselor should be able to help you here.

4. Ask other students which professor and/or class to take. The instructor makes all the difference. I had a chemistry teacher who made everything seem elementary. She was excellent. Had a statistic teacher who spoke broken English, wrote minute numbers on the bulletin board and I could not understand or hear him as he always faced the bulletin board. the class cost a fortune. I dropped it. My friend went to him and told him she was lost and needed this class, what could she do. She passed it.

5. Please set up a major. You can change it if you want to. If you determine a major then you are required to complete the classes required for that major. You can change it then the requirments to graduate change too. The main reason you need to complete forms in the office for a major is that it keeps you from taking classes that won't count toward your degree. It costs a bundle every sesmester you are in collage. A degree plan stream lines what you need to take. Saves a bunch of money. A married guy with family wanted a certified public accountant degree. He never determined a degree plan. The collage kept adding classes. He never got the degree although he went for years. Once you document a degree plan in the collage office and proper paper work is done you are required to complete the classes identified when you made the degree plan as of that date. If the collage changes or adds classes to the degree plan you fall under the old plan and saves you time and money.
With out a degree plan listed in your collage booklet then you may be taking random classes. That's great but if money is tight you increase your chances of dropping out. Look at bacholors of arts verses batholors of science makes a lot of difference in the type of classes required. Like math and science.
