My mom is being untreated unfairly in being hired?

Okay, here's the deal. My mother used to work in Duane Reade and is currently working in Rite Aid. She has at least six years of being a cashier which should be fine enough for her to become a bank teller. I have been helping my mother, who is a foreigner by the way, for the past 2 years to get a bank teller job but no idiot employer ever called.

Every time I went to a local branch, the managers always tell me to apply online with my mother's resume submitted. I am getting sick of this. I just don't know. We live in NYC and it is becoming frustrating finding a teller job. Maybe the employers are just unfair people or human resource just don't care at all. I really need some help. This is unfair to my mother. She already has the qualifications and they are not giving her a fair chance. I am not going to hear the same thing that there are other people better qualified. There are too many job openings in the bank positions and all the best people are working for the best banks, not the worst. I have been applying to the same number banks in NYC and in different boroughs and where there are open positions online and no one has even called since. I must have applied to at least 10 different banks over the past two years and still have no luck.

I took some of those online assessment tests and maybe I didn't past any of them and when I apply for jobs that didn't require tests, they still haven't called. I am getting sick of those damn assessment tests.

I have been applying for two damn years and no idiot employer has ever called. My mother is already 44 years old and I want her to get a better job. She can't take it anymore of standing 8 hours a day in her store and not sitting. Also, those job fairs I went with my mom to didn't hire her on the spot. No signups or anything to get hired. They just said the same thing which is apply online and they will call her.

I know everyone went through this but you guys eventually got jobs and I can't take it doing it alone anymore. Those guys, please tell me what I can do strengthen her chances of getting a teller job. My mom's friends don't have teller jobs, so they are no help. So please anyone who has went through the same situation as my mom and eventually got the jobs they want, tell me what I should do to get these bank employers to contact her and without taking those assessment tests?
Please, is there any way for my mom to get a bank employer to give her a fair evaluation in getting a job? I really want her to getting a better job. Is there supposed to be an agency to help my mom getting employed or maybe some special recruiting events happening? Please, anyone, tell me how I can get my mom to get those bank teller jobs? The last thing I want for my mother to have before her retirement is to have a legacy as a cashier and not becoming a teller because of unfair employers.

Everything is a process. You have to go along with it because everyone is expected to do it, and no one is so special that they shouldn't have to. It's a tough market out there with over 20 banks failing in 2008.

Because it's so competitive, the assessment tests are absolutely necessary. They want the candidates with the best skills and highest qualifications. The only reason to object to them is if you lack the skills to score well. Also, you should not go with your mother to job fairs. It's not professional. She needs to learn how to do these things alone, otherwise it's something else that might raise a red flag that she lacks certain skills or has problems functioning by herself.

It's great that you want to help so much, but trying to do things for her is not helping. She needs to be the one to inquire about positions, not have her daughter do it. I rejected a candidate for residency because it was his wife calling all the time. If he wants it, he needs to demonstrate it by making the effort and doing the work. That just might be what's preventing your mother's success.

Good luck!

P.S. Thanks, kgw. It just seems like common sense.

Tell her to call and do a follow up on her applications until they call her for an interview.

If I was you I would go to all the banks that you applied for and take your mom with you and tell them that you applied many times and you have not received a phone call back once letting you know that they would like to hire your mom or not. You also would like to know why you have never received a call back. If none of they will take the time to listen to you then I would take them to court and sue them because it seems to me that because your mom is a foreigner they might not want to higher her and if that is the case then sue them and make your momey that way and then she will never have to work again and can live off the money she makes from sueing. Hope that helps

If your Mother was qualified and a good candidate, they would be all over her, apparently she isn't, and that's why she isn't getting hired. Funny you think the problem is everyone else!

I was about to respond, but mislabeled's response is dead on - I'm in recruitment, and when I see someone else following up on a submittal for employment, it tells me that either the candidate doesn't care about getting the job on their own and isn't interested, or it tells me the applicant is not competent enough to communicate or pursue the job on their own.

If you are taking evaluations for your mother and submitting for her, I'm very glad she hasn't been hired for a job yet. Why? Because it's YOUR scores and skills the bank would be hiring - the moment your mother steps foot into a job she cannot do, she will lose her credibility with that new company AND be out of a job at Rite Aid. Not a good position for her to be in.

Being a cashier does not automatically qualify her for a bank teller role. I would highly suggest sitting down with your mother and doing some research into courses she can take that will assist in landing a teller role, perhaps even writing a polite letter to a bank's HR team, asking for their guidance in what will help your mother become a qualified candidate in the future.

Good luck.

It's tough getting a job these days. It doesn't matter if you are a foreigner or a US citizen. It's tough.

Although my mothers' desire is to work in a bank, The reality may be that looking for an alternative career is essential... right now.
