Is this college tuition to expensive?

I have a busy life and I want to go to school to get a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Development. I'm looking at an online school named Ashford University. They say that I would take the classes one at a time and they would last 5 weeks each. With this school, they way they set up classes, I think I could be done in 4 years or sooner. I am able to get financial aid but my husband and I make to much money a year to qualify for a grant. They also say that I can test out of any of the general ed. classes and that would bring the cost down a little but who's to say I will pass. With tuition and books, it would estimate to about $43,000 total. Is this to expensive?

For a degree in Early childhood Development it is too much money. What exactly would you do when you graduate? Work at a day care center? Can you do that now in your area without one? If so, would your earning potential be higher?

You need to be VERY mindful of this BEFORE borrowing this kind of money to get a degree, especially if it won't likely increase your earning potential. Good rule of thumb (esp when having to borrow money for school) is never borrow more than what you would expect to earn your first year out of college. This is how you know you can afford the student loan payments.

In other words, if you are going to have to borrow all $43,000 to get this degree, you need to be able to work, right out of college earning 43K after you graduate.

Can you do that with an early childhood development degree? Check your local classifieds and see your potential job market and the salary. If you can't find anything, you might still attend, but be prepared to accept you will wind up getting a job not related to your degree. Like working in a Dr's office as someone else said.

Go to a community college for your first two years of your bachelor's degree. They are usually less than 3,000 a YEAR and all your general ed classes are usually offered on line now. For a fraction of the cost. After the CC go to a state school. Online schools are FOR PROFIT and are there for no other reason than to take your money.

Graduated with a Master's degree with a total of 23,000 in student loans.... that's 6 years folks!!!

Well if you take $43,000 / 4 it will average 10,750 which is not that bad. The only thing to concern your self with is that it may be hard to get a job. My sister majored in Early Childhood Development with a Bachelor's degree and she is working at a Dr.'s office. So just be careful. Best of luck to you!

That is pretty spendy but it really depends on what state you live in on whether it is too expensive or not. I would seriously suggest looking into community college before making your final decision.

No that is about right. It averages about $18,500 per year
You will also have to take in to consideration that you will get Pell Grants that do not have to be paid back so your tuition will NOT be that much when it comes to paying it back.

I am a State Certified Medical Coding Billing Specialist. My training took a little over a year and cost me out of pocket $7500 for my Student Loan.. If I didn't have the Pell Grants it would have cost me $11,000 out of pocket.
My classes were also taught one at a time and in 6 week increments but be advised that you may have a few subjects that will run simultaneously and during the holiday season you will have a week off for Thanksgiving, Two weeks off for Christmas/New Years and you will have Spring Break as well. So there will be NO one to speak with at the school during those times if you have any questions.

Best of Luck to you
