What items do you always keep in the car when you are travelling with kids?

I have 2 kids, ages 4 and 8.
I am booking my driving test in the next few weeks, so need to get my car ready for after i have passed my test (fingers crossed!).
So, what would you recommend i put in my car for journeys with my kids?
I have already got a first aid kit, so everything else apart from that.

I keep a water proof blanket and a warm blanket so if we have an accident or break down on the motorway we have something to sit on and stay warm and for if they get sick i keep plastic bags and wet wipes. Most other things like toys books etc just get taken as needed. You dont want a full boot just for short journeys.

We live in Canada and so I have an emergency pack in the van that consists of booster cables, many candles (one candle can keep from you freezing to death I once heard), matches, lighters, maps, blankets, mitts, hats, jackets (which I have to update every year so the kids have emergency clothes that fit them). In summer I keep hand sanitizer and lotion in the van and such, but they freeze in winter and so I pack them as I leave the door.
As I pack when I leave I bring, soothers, cups, water bottles, snacks, toys, and an extra layer of clothing along with diapers.

I don't pack alot, I did more with my first baby.

Usual stuff in case of breakdowns - torch, dry food snacks, drinks, blankets. Apart from that - baby wipes (for the mess!) :)

Baby wipes always come in handy for keeping hands and faces clean or even bits of your car!

If we're going on long journeys I let them bring a handheld computer game or toys or something to keep them occupied. Travel games etc.

All the best for your test!

I keep their fave toys and books in the car... also i keep tylenol and when they were younger i kept sippy cups and snacks in the car... plus i have blankets and pillows in the trunk in case they want to nap... my kids are older so now instead of toys it is one toy or game and books and coloring books and they get a juice and snack and they last all the whole trip...

Currently in our car we have nappies, wipes, spare clothes, lots of toys, trays for snaking or playing on, spare coats ( for some reason it's the one thing we always forget) pram, blanket, first aid kit, torch, plastic cover for the back seat.
i forgot a selection of dvd's, dvd players, sing along cd's, story cd's, mobile phone charger

Wet wipes, my 11 month old daughter brings her favourite dollies and teddies with her, and if it's a long journey, my 13 year old daughter brings her nintendo ds and ipod. We attached some tv screens on to the back of our seats, so on long journeys they take it in turn to watch what they want. We bring elmo and dora the explored dvds with us, so our little one can watch that, then our 13 year old puts on a movie or a f.r.i.e.n.d.s dvd!
And I always bring spare nappies! Also have snacks available, blankets if it's cold, and a pillow maybe, if it's a night drive. And a place to put rubbish, a plastic bag or whatever.
Make sure you child lock the back doors, that means that the doors where your children sit are locked until you unlock them yourself, you don't want your children accidentally opening their doors on the motorway!

Good luck with your test!

An old diaper bag or gym bag with extra changes of clothes for accidents, blanket or 2 for bad weather. maybe a roadside kit. My sister got me a pump for my tire that is small and plugs into a cig. lighter for when tires get low and im on the road.

wipes, a towel, a bag for trash (unless you want it crumpled up and tossed on the floorboard)
For long trips, those dvd players that hang on the back of the front headrests are entertaining for kids

bottled water, a bag of toys, books, TUMS or dramamine for motion sickness, snacks

Wet Wipes, pegs, sticky tape, spare change of clothes, a bucket/container etc
Some of these might seen a little random, but trust me.
