My cat has sore gums?

my cat has inflamed red gums the vet tested him for deseases like cat aids and he is healthy, he's only 1 and has a good diet of meat and dry food so he hasn't got bad teeth. my vet said it's prob just gingivitis does anyone know how i can ease his sore gums, iv'e heard about gels u can get.

I am astonished your vet said it was "probably just gingivitis" and did nothing to recommend a treatment (such as teeth extraction or cleaning). Chronic gingivitis is not only painful, but it can lead to heart disease, serious oral ulcers, bronchial problems, and eating disorders, just as in humans. I've included a link that gives some more information on feline gingivitis..

Contrary to popular believe, dry food does not help dental or oral health, but rather, quite the opposite. Again, another link for your edification. Dry food does not produce the saliva necessary to keep a cat's mouth clean and healthy, for one. But, read the information.

You can help your cat by cutting back on the dry food. Dry food should not constitute more than 25% of a cat's diet for good overall health.

Hello,

Severe gingivitis in a young cat and in the absence of tooth decay is likely of viral origin. While it is important to rule out Aids (FIV) and Leukemia, the most common cause of this condition is a virus called calicivirus.

Your cat can be tested for this virus by the Glasgow Viral Lab (if you are in the UK).

I recommend against trying various home remedies but rather to try and get a definitive diagnosis as this alone will be the start of a successful treatment.

Best wishes,

Julien

I would have thought the vet could advise on a course of action?
This is online though.

Gingivitis:

Gingivitis is a general term for inflammation of the gums (gingiva). It may be localised to one tooth, or may be widespread affecting numerous teeth.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. Infection and inflammation spreads from the gums to the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. Left untreated, loss of support causes the teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. [3]

Symptoms include bad breath, drooling, red or swollen gums, gums which bleed easily.

Your veterinarian will perform an examination of your cat's mouth for signs of gingivitis such as a build up of tartar, red & inflamed gums, bad breath.

Full mouth x-rays may be recommended to determine the extent of the disease.

This depends on how far advanced the gingivitis is. Early cases of gingivitis which haven't progressed far may possibly be treated at home with regular dental cleaning. Descaling to remove tartar build up will be performed in more advanced cases.

If addressed immediately, gingivitis is reversible, if it is left to progress to periodontal disease, damage is irreversible.

i read somewhere that sore gums can be harmful to a cats health and even though vets say that dry food is healthy is good for a cats teeth, thats not 100% true wet food is important in a cats diet cuz that is where they get most of their water and nutritions from

Your Vet should be able to put your kitty on antibiotics for gingivitis and recommend you get a dental cleaning for the cat. If he/she hasn't then it may be time to find a different Vet!

take it to a vet
