What the hell? The vet didn't neuter my female cat?

I'm a little confused and I WILL call the shelter Monday. Get this. We adopted a cat the other day and we never checked the sex because I figured the shelter would have record of it. Sex didn't matter to us... we just have a lot of mice. We did, however, want it spayed/neutered. So, the shelter sent the cat to be NEUTERED. The adoption fee also included all the shots, canine AIDS testing, etc. We ended up paying $50 just for the cat to get fixed. The vet called us the next day to come pick the cat up. They didn't have to fix it because it had already been fixed. We take it home and I look on the vet record under sex: N, not S. My dad came over today and he looked and said, "This is a female..." I was like WTH? So... the question is... am I entitled to my $50 back from the shelter since it had already been fixed? AND could it be possible that the vet saw that there were no testicles and assumed it had already been neutered? What kind of vet is this that they don't even check? WTH is going on, here? I'm confused.

Ok voicing from experience. Vets can make mistakes. I took in an entire litter of kittens to be fixed. One of my boys came home not neutered. I asked the vet why and he simply said he thought it was a female and he didn't have time to spay my females due to an emergency. I understood this. But I disagreed with him and told him it was a boy and I wanted him neutered. I was right. It was a boy. My vet was really surprised and asked me how I was so sure. I told him it was just that obvious. Us women just know when we see a set of Balls I guess. lol. He did apologize so all is good. So with that shared, I'm thinking the vets there may have just read the records that came with your cat and went along with the mistake from there.If your cat is indeed a female she still needs to be spayed so just take her back and politely explain that you feel a mistake has been made and that you think your cat is a female and still needs to be spayed.They will then seriously look at the sex of your cat and can tell you. You never know you may have a neutered male still on hand. But either way the vet is the one that can clear this up for you more so than the shelter staff.

cats are felines, dogs are canines. Look it up. Seriously.

Also, neuter is actually a universal term for fixing a pet- it can be used on fixed animals that are both female and male. That might be why it said N. You really should have checked your cat's gender before. Report Abuse

I don't know what's going on with that vet, but I'd definitely find out about the "neuter" they should have done, as well as raising a stink at the shelter. If the animal didn't need to be done, then they were milking money from a consumer. That's definitely illegal. Makes one wonder how many other people got scammed like that.

I'd be confused, too.

As a 100% rule calico cats are female or if they are male they are born sterile.
As a 80% rule red tabbies are male.
How does your Dad know is a female unless it is a calico?
Can you give us a better description?
Did they shave the kitties belly and find a spay scar?

Shouldn't you be asking the SHELTER this? And do they know you don't really want a pet - you just want a mouser that you're going to toss outside? Most shelters don't adopt animals out as work crew - they're supposed to be beloved family members and live INSIDE where cats belong.

Why would a shelter test a CAT for CANINE AIDS? Canines are DOGS and there's no such thing as Canine AIDS in the first place.

And FYI - You can't neuter a female cat - they DON'T HAVE TESTICLES! A female cat would be SPAYED.

I'm kinda confused by your story. At any rate most vets charge $50 for the tests for FIV and feline leukemia. And the cat has probably had an upper respiratory vaccination and a rabies vaccination administered by the shelter. Our shelter has an adoption fee of $150 for cats and dogs which all have the tests, the vaccines and the spay or neuter. Shelters are not a "business" - they are humane and charitable organisations mostly dependent on donations for the public and their efforts at fund raising in the community. They help many animals injured and with medical issues, they house them and feed them till they get adopted. So don't begrudge them your fifty dollars.

Many years ago I adopted a "neutered male" from a local shelter. Turned out the cat was a female who had not been spayed. I was amazed that experienced shelter personnel could not tell the sex of a cat who was six months old!
