Corp Druglords..do legal drugs counteract the body's own defenses?

I was a sickly kid once...drugged up on penicilin and all sorts of antibiotics for things such as strep throat mainly. Every year I got it, every year I took a ton of crap for it that made me feel terrible and I'd know the following year I'd just get it again. When I was old enough to control what I took, I refused to take it. Got grounded and all that but I stood my ground. I must've had it bad because these days I flat out refuse to take medicine for anything and the funny thing is I never get sick anymore. The whole time I took medicine I got sick and just had to take it again sooner or later. My question...is medicine really designed to cure you? I know it aides in healing but sometimes aiding counteracts the body's own defenses. I believe that allowing my body to fight infections on its own has made my immune system extremely powerful. Kinda like if someone helps you on a math test you might pass but if you pass on your own you actually learn. Anyone agree?

FYI: For those who love to stretch it...this has nothing to do with abusing drugs, just generally taking prescribed medication. I'm also aware that what works for me doesn't work for everyone. So try to stick to the subject.

It's a nice thought, however the fact is your body's immune system simply doesn't work that way. It's difficult to explain why in a sentence or two, so if you're really interested I would advise you to take immunology, microbiology, or pharmacology courses when you get to college.

I can tell you that antibiotics are highly over-prescribed, especially in children. A parent takes their sick little kid to the pediatrician's office and wants something done. Nevermind that more often than not an antibiotic won't do anything, either because it's a virus or a different strain of bacteria. The doc feels pressured to do something to satisfy and empower mom.

The other thing to keep in mind is kids get sick much more often than teens or young adults. It takes us years to 'educate' our immune systems about what it needs to be on the lookout for. Whether you took loads of antibiotics as a kid is irrelevant to your current health, because your body would have strengthened its immune response regardless simply as a result of growing up.

Pharmaceuticals have their place, and I encourage you continuing to take an active part in your health. Too many people simply throw down their throats whatever somebody tells them is good, be it prescription meds, illegal drugs, 'herbal' remedies, or the latest fad diet. Good luck.
