My 17 month old had a fit today!?!?

My almost 17 month old had a fit today. It only lasted about 10-15 seconds. I had her in my arms and was rocking her back and forth and she started to have the fit. Her whole body went tense and it was like she had thrown herself backwards and she was shaking and her eyes were rolling around. My friend who has done a baby first aid course took her off me because I panicked pretty badly and started rubbing her back. It only lasted about 10-15 seconds and apart from being slighly withdrawn for about five minutes afterwards she has been her usual self since.

I took her to the doctor and he said that he can't explain it and it is probably just a once off thing. He said if it happens again he will do blood tests but he doesn't think it will happen again. He checked her out and said she is fine and me rocking her wouldn't have caused it.

This has never happened before, I always rock her the way I was rocking her and there is no history of epilepsy in the family. I don't understand how this could have happened. I am afraid it will happen again when I am not with her - during the night or something.

Is it likely to happen again? Are one-off fits common? What could have caused it? My husband says the doc is wrong and there must be a reason for it happening. I am so worried. So worried about it happening again when Im not there.

first of all did your baby have a fever at all? if she did then it was most likly a febril convoltion..

Febril ocnvoltions are caused by high fevers in children under 5-6
as they are not able to regulate there body temp...
high fever most likley caused by infection or being sick....

if she didnt have a fever or really really hot then it isnt a febril ocnvoltion..

i would advise you to seek another opinion from a child doctor.

my daughter (15 months) has had 2 fits of febril convoltions.it is usually a one off thing but some are prone to them....

hard to say exactly what it was with out knowing other facts or being there to see it

peace of mind is worth a million dollars, i would get a second opinion, just in case...
