Is money available to survive on over the summer?

Hi all,

I go to school in a pretty destitute area (just a comm. college for now, picked this area so that I concentrate on studies), and I was wondering -- what type of grants, if any, are available for over the summer? Is it possible to receive a loan for over summer vacation if you are not attending classes?

I am going to school 100% on financial aid and sub'd loans (I'm pretty poor right now, heh).

I am 24, and this is my first full semester of college life so it's all kind of a great, new, experience to me. I don't plan on taking summer courses if I do not have to, because I need to brush up on my algebra this summer so I can test into Trig this fall. I would also like to go visit an uncle of mine in Texas to check out where he works, because I'm pretty sure I want to do electrical engineering, but I need to see where he works first.

My family is not rich (we were all middle class, but with the way that the economy is, we are no longer), and I just don't feel comfortable asking my relatives for money at my age.

So, what are my options here (plesae, help a guy out!)? Are work-study programs available for over the summer? Is it possible to receive a subsidized loan or a work-study grant if you are not attending class?

If you are eligible for the work study program schools are allowed to offer you a job over the summer if you are planning on attending in the fall. You can check with community college and see if they have funds for this. You can not get Pell grant or federal student loans over the summer if you are not attending during the summer.

You have to be taking classes to receive financial aid.
