...Berkley University Questions?

If you've attended, or are attending Berkley, or just know anything about the school, I'd like to know some things...

First of all, I'm planning on going for a professorship, and I would like to teach Egyptology.
I still haven't gotten my test results back for my High School exiting exam, and I'm afraid of my results because I excel at everything except math...

So here's my questions.

1. Considering my plan on studying Egyptology, will my math scores propose a problem?

2. Is Berkley tough to get into?

3. Do they judge more on perfect grades, or enthusiasm, passion, and commitment?

4. Do they have any requirements before application and attendance?

5. Depending on your state, what kind of state do you have to be in to qualify for financial aid?

That's all I can think of right now...
If anyone can answer even one of these, I'll be very grateful. [:

It's great that you have a sense of direction; start with step one - the undergrad. If you just want to teach, you may only have to get a master's degree. A Ph.D. requires intense research, and a professorship requires not only teaching but publication of a book to keep your position. Keep that in mind as you progress. Here's the help I can offer on your other questions.

1. Is Egyptology a major? You might have to start with Anthro or something else related in a broad field first. Check Berkeley's departments to make sure they offer a program that will get you where you need to be. Your math scores should be decent, but they don't necessarily have to be excellent for the humanities; they may need to be GOOD on your SAT/ACT so you stand a chance to get into Berkeley.

2. Yes, but not impossible.

3. Grades/exams scores are a marker of potential to succeed. They're not the only thing, but they are usually one of the first things people look at (if they don't cut it, then the person doesn't have to read the rest of the app). Next will be your personal statement - written well and conveying your commitment, passion, enthusiasm -- and your recommendations.

4. ? See berkeley.edu for information about admissions requirements: the app and standardized tests are probably the primary requirements.

5. Check out their financial aid page, too. People from all states can apply to financial aid; there may even be scholarships for particular fields, departments, states, who knows. See if there are any local or regional scholarships you can apply to; the Berkeley ones will be really competitive.

Good luck!
