Could I Get Into Carnegie Mellon?

I really want to go to either the CMU SCS or the school of Information Systems. I'm a Junior this year and my greads are excellent, but my grades in the past two years were a bit lackluster, so I'm afraid CMU may be out of reach.

Here's my rap sheet.

UWGPA: 3.50 (Freshman), 3.52 (Sophomore) 3.91 (Junior). 3.66 (Overall)
WGPA: 3.61 (Freshman), 3.72 (Sophomore), 4.71 (Junior). 4.01 (Overall)
Class rank: 13 (Out of ~60). I go to a pretty competitive school. I'd say it's more competitive than 9 out of 10 public schools.

AP scores (all of these are just predictions at this point): Language and Composition (4), US History (5), Computer Science A (5), Calculus (4).

Academic honors (kinda lacking): National Latin Test silver medal (8th grade, 9th, and 10th, but they probably don't even care about this). Honor roll throughout 9th and 10th grade. High honors throughout 11th.

SATs: 730 Reading, 690 Math, 710 Writing. I realize that the math in particular is somewhat lacking, so I'm gonna take them again.

Service/Leadership/etc: Senior Class President, Geometry tutoring (11th grade), two part time jobs (Feb 07 - Feb 09). Five hours per week helping at a soup kitchen this summer. About 30 more hours of community service here and there and I'm going to be a teacher aid next year. I do track, tennis, and nordic skiing, though I'm not particularly good at any of them.

I can write a very good essay and I have excellent recommendations. I'm a white male.

I should mention that I'm from New Hampshire and I'm from a low income family (because both of my parents are retired. We're actually pretty well off. Don't know if they'd know though, since like I said, we don't actually make any money.)

To be frank, your overall GPA (weighted is irrelevant to the admissions panel) is on the low side and the extracurriculars are quite weak when compared to the "normal" CMU student. You must show a passion for something, not just a smattering of a variety of "resume boosting" activities. You aren't even in the top 10% of your class.

I don't mean to suggest that you couldn't possibly be accepted, but it's a gamble and the odds are slightly against you.

Your math score isn't weak so don't stress about that. Don't waste time on a retake, instead take at least one SAT II and score close to 800. Show the admissions officers that you are exceptionally proficient somewhere instead of adequate across the board.

For your own edification, you may want to mute the arrogance. It's quite repulsive.
