I'm charged with Class A misdemeanor. What are the consequences? |
I am a junior in High school, becoming a senior next year. my court date is this friday i was charged with class A misdemeanor of retail theft first time attept and I am a very good student with very high GPA and standardized test scores. i got a lawyer that costs 1500 dollars for this case in attempt to get this out of my record. I am not a citizen yet I am a permanent resident and we are eligible to apply for citizenship but i am 17 so Im considered as an adult in the court but underage in federal system so if my mother passes the citizenship test I will eventaully be granted a citizenship. Is this record going to prevent me from becoming a citizen? and Is this record dismissable, or somehow expungable in a year so when i apply to colleges they wouldnt be able to see? Am I gonna be eligible for scholarship and financial aids? how about future jobs such as like part-time students jobs like a restaurant hostess or a bank teller? please answer thoroughly my whole life depends on this. in illinois THERE ARE FEW THINGS WORSE IN THIS WORLD THAN A THIEF. You may not ever be a bank teller....but I do not think the court will be very hard on you for a first time misdeamenaor.....but your crime is a silly one... ha nice one but no one but you can fix your own problems.. As a Juvenile Probation Officer in Arizona, a Misdemeanor offense for Retail Theft (Shoplifting) would usually impose "minor" consequences such as a Diversion or formal probation program. Usually, citizenship is not affected unless the offense committed was a Felony. However, the feds are known to be very stringent on those individuals who are seeking citizenship and who commit offenses. Your good standing as a student and prior criminal record, if any, will weigh heavily on the consequence imposed upon a judge and citizenship eligibility. Bottom line though, don't commit ANY more crimes. A Misdemeanor offense also usually does not affect jobs (since in juvenile court, someone is "adjudicated" and not convicted of an offense) Same applies for federal financial aid. |
