Is your expected family contibution for financial aid really lower if family receives federal means tested pr?

The FAFSA says if you or anyone in your family receives certain benefits then their expected family contibution may be less. Is this true? Our family is under $50,000 AGI. Does checking off the fact that we receive WIC benefits REALLY matter?

It could make a difference. But keep in mind the FAFSA is a federal document... you have to be truthful. If you receive those benefits, you should mark that box.

If you receive the benefits then tell them you do, if you don't it could be considered fraud. Not sure how it will actually effect your EFC as that sounds like something new on the FAFSA this year.

I did the FAFSA this year and I don't remember reading anything about that.. If u rec. assistance than u are considered low income so yes, it will help u.. As far as WIC, even middle class get that and they don't get any financial aid. WIC is not considered "welfare"...If it ask, and u do, than check it.. However know that some students will auto be selected for verification and u may have to prove what u say.
