My mom just tested positive for Auto Immune Disorder, what does this mean?

my mom just called me crying because she got a physical two weeks ago. she just got her test results back with a note from the dr saying she tested positive for auto immune disorder. she is not sure what this means, and can't talk with the dr until monday. does this mean aids?

There are quite a few autoimmune disorders like Dibetes Type I, Graves, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and many others. Normally, your immune system looks for "foreign" agents in your body, hunts after them, and then kills them. In an autoimmune disorder, something has gone wrong and your immune system thinks that a part of your body is "foreign" as well. What happens next really depends on what type of disorder it is. Many of them can be treated with little or no symptoms on a regular basis. Now is definitely not the time to worry. Find out what the root of the problem is from the doctor, then you can know what to do about it.

Acquired Immune Deficiency is Aids

if your Mom takes any depressants it is a side effect from them=it is not cancer

Go to this website....http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/...

I think it will help you and your mom

It could be Multiple Sclerosis. I have two friends that have this. They are able to live with it, although they do sometimes have rough days.

The first poster's answer is 100% unrelated to what your mother tested positive for.

There fall a lot of diseases under this. Auto Immune disorder means, that your body is developing a defense against itself (ie Lupus). The antibodies in the bloodstream are fighting against parts of the own body. It is not like AIDS, HIV is a virus which shuts down your immune system, that's different. Find out which kind of disease she has, she probably would have to take medicine which suppresses the immune system to stop it from doing harm to the own body. There is no cure.

There are lots of auto immune disorders.

Its not AIDs.

Its like an allergic reaction except too strong so the body attacks itself as well.

Different ones cause different problems (Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and celiac disease are three different auto immune disorders) so you need to see the doctor and find out the name of her disease.

Good luck and best wishes to you and your mum

An Auto Immune Disorder is not Aids!!! I would say that your mother had several blood test and her ANA (anti nuclear antibody) came back positive . This would indicate that she indeed has some sort of auto immune disorder and there are hundreds from diabetes to Vitilago. Although these disorders are not curable for he most part they are all treatable. Some Like Lupus are very Serious while others like some thyroid disorders are just a pain in the butt. Please tell your mother to relax and wait until Monday and see what the Doctor recommends next. I am sure she will be fine.
