Question about the gyno?

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but I know that gyno's check for cancer cells or whatever when you get checked out, but do they also check you for STD's? I'm not talking about something curable like chlamydia, but something more severe like AIDS? I've never been tested before (I am sexually active) and have been to the gyno recently for the first time. As I was leaving the office, the nurse told me no news is good news, so I am assuming I am ok since its been a few months and I haven't heard anything.

All the pap test screens for is abnormal cells. Any other tests related to specific STDs have to be specifically requested by the patient (like hte others said, "full STD screen") and with her signed consent. The privacy laws around STDs are very stringent, so you certainly would not be screened for these conditions before giving explicit permission (and a blood sample of course).

No AIDS is a seperate blood test, you can have them do it or you can go to a clinic to have it done. Also, gyno's don't check for every STD out there, you have to specifically ask them to do a full STD check.

They'll check for it if you ask them to; usually it would come up, though, even in routine bloodwork. Did they take blood last time you were there? You might want to call back and ask. Please don't assume you don't have it if there's a possibility you might!

If there was no blood work done, then you were not tested for STD.

You have to ask to have the non-standard std tests done. There is also Syphilis as well as HIV/AIDS, which they can screen you for using a blood sample. Many places have sexual health clinics which can do these test confidentially and often free of charge. Take a look in your phone book. Cheers, Ame

they don't check automatically... you should ask for more tests...
