Why does dying have to hurt?

If there is a god or an afterlife why does it have to be so painful to get there?
Why cant we asll just go to sleep and not wake up the next day? why does there have to be all the pain and suffering like with cancer and aids?

If its some kind of test or sick joke I am gonna be real mad when I get over there!!!!

Its just how your body works. Pain lets us know something is wrong. Which is helpful, until you are dying, but thats what we have morphine for.

Dying isn't always painful. I've been a geriatric/Hospice nurse for about 5 years now and I can tell you, more often than not, death is very peaceful. Many of these people do go in their sleep with no pain. I have been with several patients when they passed and it was, believe it or not, a very beautiful and a very spiritual experience. I can tell you that, because of my experiences, I am not afraid to die myself. As for an afterlife, I can't answer that...guess we'll find out when we get there.

Most people die in their sleep. Had you something more exciting in mind?

it isn't always painful some do just 'fall asleep' and not wake.

but too cancer, aids and pain is only in the flesh and they are not fabrications by a god to punish anyone...they are diseases thats all and they results of those diseases eating away at our bodies cause pain. just like with any disease, its just nature.

life is not a test or sick joke, its just life, thats all.

Dying hurts because we are selfish. We all want to get to the afterlife, but nobody wants what is necessary to get there i.e. death.
Dealing with a chronic illness myself and two deaths in my family this year, I ask the same questions you do. The fact is that life has no guarantees. Why does the subway shut down on the very day you needed to get home early? Why does the power go out on the night of the Superbowl? Why is there so much wealth in the world and millions die of hunger everyday?

I tell you what, I do believe in God. Read James Chapter One. From the beginning of time people have been going through the same trials I'm going through. Why should God suddenly lift me up and set me apart from the others?

Having experienced only the bad side i don't know if there is a good side, three people who i was close to died in lots of pain, even with medication, it doesn't always help. I guess going in your sleep could be pretty painless, if you hadn't been ill before hand. The only way you will know if there is an afterlife is when you go!

Hard question! I've seen both sides, my nan and mum died piecefully and quickly but my other nan and grandad died in pain. I dont understand why live has to be so cruel. But in both case someone suffers a lot of pain. When a loved one dies of a long painful illness they suffer a lot but the family left behind are a bit more prepared (well, as preperared as you can be regarding death!) as they are expecting it. But when someone dies quickly its really hard for the people left behind as most of them are in shock, denial and very angry (i was....a lot!!).
