Kitten is bloated&having trouble breathing. FIP Negative. Vets don't know what's wrong. DH wants to euthanize.

Please help me! My 8 month old tabby (male) is bloated, strains to breathe and now won't eat. He went through this last week and then went into kidney failure. But he bounced back after 3 days of IV fluids. Now he's sick again, but kidneys are okay.

My husband wants to end his suffering, but I want to give him a chance. He's the sweetest cast ever!

Doctors have run tons of tests, done x-rays and nothing seems out of the ordinary. They've put him on diuretics and antibiotics, but he's only a little better. He's suffering, but I don't want to put him down if there's hope!

He's been tested (about a month ago) for FIP, leukemia and AIDS. All negative. Even tested again for FIP last week. Also negative. Should we put him down or is there hope?

Additional info:

We've had him for 2 months and he was sick with an upper resp. inf. when we found him. Antibiotics cleaned that up. I have 3 other healthy cats. All are indoor/outdoor cats. I never saw my kitten eating any plants. CBC normal. About 5-6 weeks ago had all his shots and was dewormed. X-ray-heart & lungs normal. 2 Poss. growths near ribcage (benign). Vet said they would not cause the fluid buildup in his abdomen. No ultrasound yet. Seeing new vet today.

Might test him for FIV & FeLV again too... it can take up to 3 months for it to show up on a test (after being exposed to the virus). I assume they've looked at pneumonia and stuff like that? Maybe consider taking him to a different vet for a second opinion? You should be able to get the Xrays from your current vet, so they don't have to do 'em again... but maybe another vet can catch something the first one missed?

I'm so sorry! Leukemia sucks. Be sure to have your other cats tested. Again it can take 3mo to show up... so might wait a month or two. It's HIGHLY transmittable... they don't have to fight. Email me if you have ?'s. Cant fit much here. Lots of exp. w/ Leuk. Report It

Try another vet & have to tests transfered.Is the stomach twisting? Pedialyte will help the cat stay hydrated.Good luck & bless your heart.

I don't know how many vets you've seen and I know animal care costs money, but try one more in your area. Also, I'd ask the SPCA what they recommend.

how long ago was he tested for leukemia? if it was when he first got sick, test him for it again! this illness is very tricky! he may still have it! i fostered stray cats for 3 years and have can across this illness a few times! it is a very complicated illness, and can play tricks on you! i hope to god it is not that, but i would have him tested a 2cd time!!!

Get a second opinion-right away. Your kitty is worth it-give him another chance. If he were very old, I might say put him out of his misery, but he's so young!

I'm sorry but I can't feel sorry for anyone that's letting their pet suffer. The poor thing. You know in your heart the best thing for that poor, suffering animal is to let him go. You're only being selfish keeping him alive. Do what's best him, not for you.

thats a hard one.i'm going thru almost the same thing your going thru; my poodle of 8 years is dieing'he has congestive heart failure. i got tests and some pills at the vets office.he was good for 3 days ;and today he had another seizure...god'i don;t want my boy to suffer ..heart pills and cardeolagist is in the thousands..i;m gonna go to the vet 1more time and find out how long will my dog suffer?will he just cough'and seizure? i wish i could take half of my peanuts pain away .good-luck and god bless you all.................

go to the vet and ask for antibiotics if you did that already you HAVE to force-feed your cat.it needs to eat and drink.this has happened to 3 of my cats a couple of times.if this doesnt worry im sorry.

Have him tested again. These diseases can fool tests every now and then. Also, the tests themselves can be old, inaccurate, preformed or read improperly.
That said, keep in mind that there are some defects and problems that can't be seen or fixed by modern medicine. It might just be his fate not to live very long.
Consider too that there are hundreds of kittens who would love to be yours. Ones that can benefit not only from your loving home, but also your money.
I know it's a difficult decision. I'm so sorry for your trouble.

Unfortunately there is a lot you failed to mention. Is this kitten an indoor cat only or does it spend more time outside. Is there any plants in or out that he frequently chews on or spends time around?
You mentioned the big tests but not if a CBC and general chemistry were done and the results of those? Ultrasound, Heart worm test (while rare can still occur in cats).
Unfortunately you are in a hard position. A second opinion is never unjustified. However you must do what is best for the kitten even though it is emotionally hard for you. If his symptoms continue he will have trouble eating and than you will have the potential for liver failure along with everything else.
Whether spiritual or not turn to your conscience and do what's best for your pet.
