Alright ladies I'm really nervous that I'm having my first pap smear done, what should I expect? |
What exactly do they do at a pap smear? For me the hardest part was having to totally open my legs up. I would suggest a female OB-Gyn, or ask for a few minutes to speak with the physician before you disrobe. When I was young it was odd to me, but here goes...You will get a robe and a sheet, you will place the robe with the opening in the front if you are getting a breast exam. Ask the doctor to show you and tell you what they are doing, so that you know how to do a self-exam. WebMD is a fantastic resource for that... It is just very uncomfortable and awkward. But you will get use to it. By the second time it will be better. Dont worry everything will be ok....you might feel a little weird but you'll get over it and a little pressure!!! They have you strip down naked, put a piece of paper on (they call it a "gown" but we know better) and spread and prop your legs up in some stirrups on a table. You are then smeared with KY. Then they get this big metal device, shove it up you, and crank you open. Expect this to hurt. Then they'll swab you with a giant Q-tip, and dig around in there with glove-covered fingers. Your doctor will attempt to make small talk at this time, making you even more uncomfortable than you were in the first place. They generally only test for gonohrrea (sp?) and chlamydia (sp?), but you can ask them to test for other things. They may or may not draw your blood. "Enjoy" your first pap. They will open your vagina with an instrument called a speclum and they will swab the inside of you for a sample to make sure nothing is wrong and you have no abnormal cells. It's just cold and a little uncomfortable. Make sure the doctor is tall dark and handsome. It's not that bad...they're going to put this thing in you and insert a long cotton swab. it's not terribly comfortable, but there's not serious pain. it's not that big of a deal. you take off your clothes and put on a paper gown. then you lie back and put your feet up in stirrups in the air. the only thing that might be uncomfortable is if the speculum is cold. that's what the doctor uses to open you a bit wider. this site explains it very well. They make you scoot down on the bed and place your feet in these stirrup-looking things. You'll be covered in a hospital sheet that opens up in the front. basically its taking a sample (swab) from your cervix. they ask you to lay down and bend your knees and relax. its embarassing yes, but they have done it many times before and dont think anything of it. they then use a surgical clamp thing to spread open the inside of the vagina (dont worry - its not as horrific as it may seem. in fact you can hardly feel it) they then take a swab from your cervix and release the clamp (i dont know what its called exactly), you may feel a little pressure but no excruciating pain. Hope all goes well. ok i will try to explain the best i can what they do is have you undress from the waist down they use im not sure of what the medical device is call but kinda looks like a metal duck beak The woes of woman hood. I am now 40 years old and have always dreaded having a pap smear done. You may feel violated and it could be painful for you especially if you have never had one before. I do not know if you are going alone or not, but since this is your first time you may want to bring a close friend with you or your mom, someone that has had it done before so if you need someone to talk to about it they will be there for you. Good Luck! 1. Don't worry, it's not nearly as bad as people make you beleive it is. expect a stranger to be poking around your ladyhood. no really, it's not that bad. i haven't had one, but i don't think i'll be freaked out when i go. and don't be shy, the doctor has seen a million vaginas before yours :p as far as i know, they put a tool in you that the use to hold your vagina open so they can get a good look inside to look for abnormalties. one of my friends said that they took a cotton swab and rubbed it on her vaginal wall to do a test on to find out if you have any STDs. it'll all be over before you know it, so just stay calm and relaxed. They do not test your for STD'S unless you ask for it. If you want to get checked ask to be checked for ALL STD's not just HIV. At the docs office the nurse will check your temp and blood pressure etc just like usual. She will ask if you have your period, when your last one was, are you sexually active etc. DO NOT LIE. They do not tell anyone what you tell them but if you lie there could be health problems they may not look for. The nurse will have you undress either from the waist down or all of your clothes depending on their proceedure. She will have you sit on the exam table in a gown or covered with a sheet. The doc will come in and have you lie down and put your feet in the stirrups. He will insert a plastic speculum in your vagina to hold it open so he can see better. THIS DOES NOT HURT. He will visually look at the vagina to be sure the tissue looks healthy etc, He will take a small slim wooden tongue depressor looking thing and gently swab a few cells from your cervix for the pap smear, THIS DOES NOT HURT EIITHER and if it does hurt tell the doc so he can fix it. He will then take the speculum out and insert two fingers of one hand while he presses on your abdomen to check your ovaries etc. If he is doing a breast exam he will do that. That is ALL that happens with a pap and pelvic exam. You will then get dressed. If you ask for STD testing he may take a couple more swabs from your vagina but that depends on how they run their tests. The rest of the STD testing is via a blood sample and urine sample. The HPV shot is a 3 series shot so you will have to come back when they tell you for the second and third of those shots. That will be the end of your exam and the doc will ask if you have an questions or concerns and you are done. They do a PAP to test for cancer. No blood is taken for a PAP. firstly if yr feeling nervous, find a female dr. after many years of pap smears, i still find it easier with a woman. It might make you feel better if you have a female Doctor instead of a male at first. I was scared my first time but it really isn't that bad. You can ask for them to do a check on all STD's if you want and they will. It will take a week or two to get your results back. Don't stress it to much You will spread your legs and place your feet into these brackets that are attached to the bed table you are laying on. Next they will insert what looks like two spoons that are attached. Once inserted the spoons are opened up inside of you, just a little and they will go in with a long stick thing and pinch off a tiny piece of I don't know, inner skin. If you are talking about what a nice day it is and that you are going to watch you bf play football, you won't even feel it. Good Luck. It's not bad, seriously. people tell horror stories and it's not that bad. When the doctor puts the speculum in it sort of feels like a little pressure and it sort of burned/pinched a little bit, but nothing severe. Then they just give a swab and remove the speculum. It takes, literally, 1 minute. If not less. You sound like a smart young lady. I think its great to ask for a Aids test, especially if you have had any kind of sexual contact with anyone. They dont normally take blood at a pap smear. Everyone here has explained the pap smear very well. Its a long q-tip that they touch you inside with, it does not hurt. They will do a breast exam, they will take a smear inside your cervix with a long cotton swab. It's a little uncomfortable when they insert the speculum but if you relax you will be fine. You will feel violated. |
