How can a guy who got a "don't ask" discharge from the Air Force become a Federal Officer?

Wouldn't his bad discharge and testing positive for AIDs preclude him from a law enforcement position.

First, no department that I know of tests for HIV (AIDS is only diagnosed when the person becomes sick with the opportunistic infections that are the hallmark of advanced HIV disease). Also, I do not believe that such a discharge is considered dishonorable. It may be uncharacterized, but usually someone is only precluded from employment in a law enforcement agency if the discharge is dishonorable.

Well you don't receive a dishonorable discharge for being a homosexual. Second, if this person was fully qualified and advanced through ever phase of selection for the agency he works for then what is the problem. The only discharge that arguable could keep you from being an LEO or any job for that matter is some form misconduct that caused you to get a something other than honorable discharge. And the guy who answered that it was a friend or a relative helped him get the job is clueless. If there was something in the guy's past that was a threat to national security he would not have been hired. Last time I checked being gay was not a threat to national security.
