here is a list that i have come up with of books that i specifically remember liking. not sure if you are a guy or a girl and some of these books are more girly but most of them are not super duper girly romantic crap.
*catcher in the rye

*crazy ladies, she flew the coop, american pie by michael lee west (girly)
*i absolutely love the harry potter series, can't get enough
*i just read the books twilight and new moon by stephenie meyer and have the third book "eclipse" on pre-order. (somewhat girly but the books have a large male following too)

i've just started reading tuesday with morrie by the same author as 5 people you meet in heaven... it's just as good.

Have you heard of "The Secret" & "The Law Of Attraction"? These are currently bestselling books. What type do you like? Do go for romance, action, thriller, etc.? My motto on books is "If I see it, I'll know it." I usually want to read first the title of the book. If I like how it sounds then I'm going to consider buying it. Right now my favorites are the Buffy & Charmed series books. Try reading The Pilgrimage. Your choice.

Since you have a taste for the darker books on occasion, you migh try "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami, "The World According to Garp" by John Irving, "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, "Fall to your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald (contains a lesbian relationship), "The Man in my Basement" by Walter Mosely or "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Harry Potter Books
Prepare for school

I just finished The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar.
It is about two women in India, one of a high caste, and her servant, who is of a low caste. It is wonderful.

you have a GOOD selection there!...How'bout On The Road by Jack Kerouac?! (MY favorite!!) Or Yeats, Shakesperare (theTempest preferably)-something by Hunter S. Thompson...the early stuff of his....um....some James Joyce just for the heck of it....but you have a really good list here....I think Ill check out a few of those myself! Thanx!...other favorites of mine:
The Outsiders (teenage but it brings back memories!)
Borstal Boy by Brendan Behan
The Quare Fellow by Brendan Behan (play)
The Hostage by Brendan Behan (play)
anything by Steinbeck!
Jim Morrison poetry (ANY of it!)
Get in the Van by Henry Rollins(exellent book!)
Poetry by John Updike (old stuff)
Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
....but ANY Kerouac stuff will set ya right!..promise!

Brave New World
Memoirs of a Geisha
Lord of the Rings
The Chronicles of Narnia

I agree with Stacy26 based on your list you'd like Thompson or Kerouac. I'd toss in a Elmore Leonard book maybe Mr Paradise (Get Shorty is more famous but it and it's sequel were made into movies.) I'd also recommend Galapagos by Vonnegut since you liked Cat's Cradle. I also like Wouk's Caine Mutiny.
My favs are To Kill a Mockingbird, Cat's Cradle, Treasure Island, Old Man and the Sea.

Please visit the web site below as a guide, these are 10 books from the list I read (except Nos. 9, 10).
1. Love in the Time of Cholera
2. The Stranger
3. The Tin Drum
4. The Old Man and the Sea
5. The Trial
6. 1984
7. Mrs.Dollaway

9. Thousand and One Nights (I'm reading Vol. II in the Everyman's Library series, translated by Husain Haddawy), and
