College course "special needs" thought?

Ok, I'm in college, and those of you who are will probably know how on every syllabus theres a section where it says that if you need some special testing aids (like poor vision, dyslexia, etc, you should talk to a campus department and will accomidate you. Now...

I took a college algebra class and earned a B, decent, but Myself and the whole class could have done way better. We attended three times a week for only 50 minutes, so the exams often were less then 45 minutes-no where near enough time to complete the exams. The class averages in my class were 61%, and often I'd find myself "guessing the best looking answer" not neccessarily because i didn't know it, but I realized that I didn't have the time to work everyone out. Also, I'd get my exam back and realized I missed a probably I could have done.

So to the point, Im enrolled in a calculus class, same time limits...could I request a longer period of time for the exam, saying 50 mins isn't enuff...or will that not fly?

I don't intend to lie about a legal disability, rather just say that I feel I am not capable of completeing the exam in the time given, not due to lack of knowledge but because of unfair time limits..

And no there is no curve..
Class averages are around 60%

I'm guessing you are only kidding about lying of having a disability as falsifying such a thing is grounds to have you kicked out of the institution.

Aside from that, you might want to evaluate how you can improve your study methods. In a curved grading scheme, someone else got an A when you got a B so you need to ask yourself why someone else did better than you under the same playing field.

Instead of trying to claim that you're disabled when you're not, why don't you talk to the professor and explain that it would be really great if the whole class had more time for the exam. I used to take a chemistry class where the professor arranged to give the exams in the evening so that people could have more time.

Your professor may not be aware that people are struggling to finish the exams on time. On the other hand, he/she might be designing the exams so that you are time pressured. If he/she grades on the curve then it probably won't matter anyway. But there is no reason you can't tell the professor (in a completely respectful way, of course) that it's difficult to finish the exam in the period of time you have.

You and some of the other students should approach the teacher/professor about the time problem. He/she may not be aware of it. The special needs accomodations would not apply to you.
