How does the regular changing of position of an individual within a huddled group aids the retention of heat? |
Basically....why do emperor penguins huddle and what r the advantagees...any suitable experiment to test that? Think about it- the more exposed you are to the outer edge of the group, the faster you will lose heat as you are on the edge of the thermally stable environment. Moving further within the thermally stable environment (e.g. group of penguins) allows your body to remain thermally stable (penguin body temperature), as less of the surface area of your body is exposed to a temperature gradient. The 'edge' of the group needs to be constantly moving inward as something like a convection current is formed, with colder bodies moving inward to be warmed. Clever! |
