Can kittens get cancer when they are so young?

I have a 3 month old kitten and he wasn't feeling good at all--he kept getting sick a lot--so we took him to the vet yesterday. They kept him overnight and did the Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS tests on him and they both came back negative. However, his white blood cell count was extremely high (they said the normal was around 17,000 and his was all the way up at 78,000) and they think it could either be an EXTREMELY severe infection or leukemia (the people kind as in cancer and no the feline virus). She was also leaning towards leukemia since the WBC count was that high. My kitten also has a lump in his intestines that hurt him really bad when she touched it. I just was wondering if anyone had or knows of anyone who has dealt with a young kitten who has cancer........ I guess any cat who has had cancer works too. What did you do? What can you do for them?

im sorry to hear about your kitten. my sister in law had a cat who had cancer....it was a bit older, but it was very ill. they tried to hold on to him for as long as they could. but in the end they couldnt stand watching him suffer. they ended up putting him to sleep. there is really nothing you can do other that hope it is not cancer. there are tons of "natural" cures out there that just fill owners with false hope. beware of those products.
if it is cancer, just make you spend alot of time with your kitten. make sure your kitten knows he was loved in his life time.
this must be a very difficult thing to go threw. i hope it works out in the end.
good luck

yes

I had a cat who had leukemia. He was 12 yrs. old. He had got really pale, lost a lot of weight, and wasn't eating. We took him to the vet and found out he had leukemia. We decided to put him down instead of letting him suffer.

Young cats can get cancer just the same as young children can get cancer. Cancer can affect anyone reguardless of age.

I recently lost a kitten to cancer, he was just under 16 weeks old. He did not have Feline AIDS or Feline Leukemia, initial diagnosis was pneumonia, actually cause of death was only established after a necropsy.
He was active pretty much up to the night he died, and never seemed to be in any pain, never cried, he just laid down and died.
My vet bill was close to $2,000 (two thousand), and a lot of lost work time. Was it worth it? for me it was, it gave me a couple more weeks with him, and he was very alive during that time.
If you are asking for advice, ask your vet if it is survivable, and at what cost to you and to the kitten, no easy choices.
