How can I get the school to give my 7yr old(Diabetes#1) his lunchtime blood sugar test?? |
The Principle of the school verbally refuses.(Ontario, Canada) Could I legally get the school to accept this of giving a simple blood sugar test??? They will not get aids or infected of anything, and it's only one time a day that they would have to do it. Also it will be a bit hard for me to go to his school everyday as I will be busy and there would be no one to get my 4 yr old daughter from her school bus stop half day kindergarten. She will be having morning kindergarten everyday(Mon-Fri) ThankU in advance for your help on this The school doesn't have a school nurse. And Thank you those are very helpful informative answers! I'll try with of teaching him to eventually learn to do a test on his own. And get active with the Diabetes Association here, and hopefully get the school educated of it. (It's kind of nuts as well) bcause I live in the capital city of Canada. But I'm not meaning to dis my country! It's a great country. lol. You can train your son to self-test, but you would still need school permission to do so. You wouldn't want them to think he is doing something against school policy then confiscate his equipment. The downside risk is too great. The school nurse should be able to do it. You need to talk to the teacher and the school nurse if there is one at your son's school. It sounds absurd that the school would refuse to do something as simple but necessary as a finger stick. You can also teach your son to test his own blood sugar and have the teacher or nurse supervise. If all else fails you should consider taking legal action. That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard! When I was diagnosed way back in 1978, (I was only 7), the school I went to learned what needed to be done for me whether it was testing my urine,(they didn't do blood sugar checks in the 70's) or knowing the signs of too-low blood sugar. You need to find out what the guidelines are in Canada and if they are not up to par, you need to take action for your son's sake so that he realizes how important this issue really is!! Good luck and make sure you involve your whole family for support!! Hi! You need to set an IHP with the school.. It's a health plan for your child when he/she is at school... That's when the school nurse and his teacher can test his/her blood sugar. most of the time it's the school nurse but if she is sick then the teacher can do it... You can call Families Togethers for help.... The number is 1-620-276-6364. It's in Kansas but they might know someone who is in Canada that can help.... We had this same problem with my 6yr old niece. You can go to the district ~or whoever the principal answers to~ and get a para for your son. A para is like a nurse but also an aid for your son. They basically sit with the child for a few hours a day in class and make sure they are okay and feeling well. Especially since some classes are overcrowded, paras are excellent for children with special needs. I would definitely talk to someone "higher" than the principal of the school. Good luck! This is a horrible situation. The school should be sympathetic and have some sort of nurse for these problems. All I can see right now is for you to go there or send someone there the days you cant go. In the mean time maybe you should interseek why they dont have nurses on call just in case anything were to happen. Good Luck My daughter had to deal with this same problem all throughout school. She is now a senior in High School. She was dxed at age 2. This is unfortunate, and I don't know the law in Canada, but he could possibly leave school property to take care of this. Is there anything near the school like a Clinic or Doctors office? Can your Son learn to operate the meter alone, or with the help of an older Brother or Sister? or Friend? I agree that there should be a nirse and she should be doing it. If i were you, i would teach him to do it himself, then show a responsible adult the blood sugar level. |
