Is the ELISA test accurate? and what factors affect it? |
I went to donate blood today and the doctor told me that my ELISA test results showed what she called a "doubt". So she took a blood sample and is running the test again but its going to take a few days. She said that in most cases the ELISA test results are not accurate because they are overly sensitive and told me not to worry. But all i've read on the internet says that it is very accurate. Should i be worried? I remember that the doc told me that my HTLV antibody count was high or something. I'm hoping its a false positive. We'll see. Elisa test is the antibody test for HIV and extremely sensitive, provided the patient is not in the window period. (interval following acquisition of HIV infection during which the level of antibody is too low to be detected.). Elisa is one of the best screening test . Sensitivity is usually calculated, by testing conventional panels of sera from patients who have established infection or by testing sequential samples, from patients, who are seroconverting. False- positive tests may occur in those repeatedly exposed to bacterial pathogens(e,g,injecting drug users), highly antibody titres against malaria, exposure to other retroviruses. Laboratory procedures, (e.g repetitive freezing and thawing and use of heated sera to inactivate virus) may also contribute false-positive results. no the elisa test isnt accurate i had that test 4 lyme desise and it showed negtive then i took another test and it was so positive 4 lyme it was off the charts Speaking of which, I have to do an ELISA on HCV tomorrow too. but i'm a researcher |
