Aids and ER?

I went to the ER last month because I had a gall bladder attack. When they take your blood...do they test for AIDS?

The only reason I asked was bc the doctor said I had a high white blood cell count but he never did anything about it.

When a person has a high white blood cell count that usually means there is some kind of infection. White blood cells fight off infection and foreign materials. Since you had a gallstone (a foreign material) your body most likely started multiply it's white blood cells, which resulted in you having a high white blood cell count. It have NOTHING to do with AIDS.

Also, if a person comes into an ER they will NOT test you for HIV/AIDS. Usually the only time they will ever test a person for HIV is if a nurse accidentally sticks herself with a needle right after she has give a patient some medication using a needle and syringe. The nurse is given an emergency dose of HIV medication to be taken ASAP and the patient is given a HIV test. Since it takes a few days sometimes for HIV results to come back the nurse needs to take the medication ASAP just in case the patient is HIV positive.

Your blood generally isn't test unless there has been exposure to an hospital employee. Then your blood is tested for the employees protection.

Would be very surprised if they did'nt.Any nursing staff would want to know thier patient/s are aids free.The medical staff to be able to prescribe medication.Anyway if you have the HIV virus it's your duty to inform the medical personel

They do not check for AIDS routinely. Firstly, your privacy is protected when it comes to AIDS. Secondly, insurance doesn't pay for a test unless it is supported by your diagnosis.

They would only check for AIDS if they had some reason to believe your immune system wasn't working right or if they were stuck with a sharp instrument (ie needle) that had been used on you.

Well I think it may be different in every state and each hospital but, I know in the hospitals here you have to sign a release to even be tested for HIV. However, if your blood has come in contact with a hospital employee they will ask you for sample of your blood. Honey, do not torture yourself if you have any concern that there is a chance that you have been infected then go and get yourself tested it is better to know than to worry yourself sick about it, trust me I learned this the hard way and everything was fine with me.
