Maybe I'm being too silly, but here goes-AIDS question?

The last time I had unprotected sex was the last of April. Got an AIDS test in May. Is it common to have a false negative. Was that too soon?

Yes it is detectable in a 6 months span. 95+% of the time it shows up within the first 2 months. I think your okay, but def go and get another after the 6 month mark.

When a virus gets into your body, it takes the body a little while to mount a defense. A test in May might have been too early to detect an infection if one occurred. So, I would say there is a possibility that your test gave you a false negative.

If I were you, I would get tested twice more: once to confirm the negative test and a second time to confirm the confirmation. Probably the last test isn't necessary, but it should really put the issue to rest for you and for your future partner.

Also, as far as I understand HIV tests, the first test of the series looks for antibodies against the virus. Too close to the date of infection means not enough antibodies to make the test positive - hence, this is why I say your first test may not have been reliable. On the other hand, antibodies stay in your system for a very long time and so the tests don't rely on the presence of active virus to diagnose your HIV status - and so you won't need to go get tested again any more than once or twice.
