When will AIDs show on a test?

My husband had sex a few years ago with a girl that apparently "got around." She never told him of any diseases that she carried such as STD's. He went to the health department 2-3 weeks after their "heavy night" and had blood tests done after finding out that she carried diseases. Unfortunately, it's been 2 years now since that horrible night, and we have found out that she has been going around and saying she has had AIDs. His test came back clean, but I'm wondering since I've studied AIDs (some websites say it could take two weeks or so to find out and others have said it's impossible to find out in two weeks,) how long will it take to find out? He is going to the health department as so am I, with unfortunately, many other people from the same woman. What I need to know is really how long will it take to find out.

Let me start by saying sorry about all the stress you are under! It is frustrating reading a million different things on the internet. I had a "scare" myself and I read stories from "you can know in two weeks" to "get tested every year for 10 years!" (I was like 10 years!?! How am I to sleep for the next 10 years?) BUT my doctor was VERY reassuring and let me know that the test for AIDS is so much better than what it used to be... (think about the organ donors and blood donors... they usually can catch AIDS quick) Most doctors agree that 6months is the best time (though you can go earlier) to know for a fact that you are fine. I tend to be a tad bit OCD... so I went at 6 weeks.... 6 months.... 9 months... lol to finally be able to tell myself I was fine... I am sorry you have to go through this and good luck!!

within an hour if the test was ordered STAT. this question was for your gyn.

man...that's tough. Unfortunately, I had the same thing happen to me. Except it was me!! I didn't know that my ex-fiance got around and after the rumor got thru....I found out that it was rumored that he had AIDS. I freaked out, got tested right away and everything was fine. 10 years, and a daughter later (and a husband that is NOT him) all is well.

Don't let the rumor mill mess with your mind, BUT do take precautions. I think you have done everything you could. Wait six months and take it again. And if you are STILL uncomfortable, keep taking it until you are. Its a very serious thing...

The AIDS test is actually a test for antibodies in the blood, which can take up to 6 months to develop depending on viral load. Your husband should only require one testing since his contact with this woman was over 6 months ago. However, if you only became intimate with him in within the last 6 months, you may need to return for a second blood test.
