Do they give newborn babies hiv/aids test automatically after birth?

when a baby is born, and they run test in the hosptital, do the hiv/aids test one of the test they run?

this is why i asked, i dont need no smart comments

http://www.comcast.net/news/national/ind...

yes

I think if the mother/father isn't infected, they don't do the test. But i think you could ask the hopital to do it if you want to.

I suppose if the mother thinks she has it...

why would they have aids. Do you have them.

only if the mother tests positive. otherwise there is no need. i would think

If it isn't a practice at your hospital it should be. Be sure to ask your Pediatrician and ob/gyn to make sure that your baby get's tested.'

In the state where I live it is mandatory for the mother to be tested before giving birth as there are things that can be done a the time of delivery to stop HIV from being passed to the unborn child.

They don't unless there is a problem with the mother or if she has suspicions about the father.

No. If the mother is HIV+ the baby should be followed with serial tests every 3-6 months for about 2 years.

They did when i had mine, you should check in the hospital where you are having the baby though.

It doesn't work on a new born. Even the studies base their results on tests that people aren't sure of.

The problem is that very few HIV tests actually look for the virus itself. Instead almost all look for immune system markers. The problem with doing this in a newborn is that newborns have immune system markers that are similar to the mother's at birth for the first few months. Testing a newborn for such markers is how you tell if a mother has a disease, not how you tell if a disease transfers to the baby.

I don't think there is a nation wide standard. BUT, if you have even remotely think you or your husband may be affected, you should insist on having the test done on you and your baby.

Only if one or both of the parents possibly have it. They don't even test babies if they have had a transfusion anymore because the donated blood is already tested before it is given. If the mother thinks she has it there is medicine that can be given to her to reduce the risks of the baby catching it during the pregnancy and mainly during birth.

In most states, the mother is tested while pregant unless you specificaly state that you do not want to be tested (they can not force you to take an HIV/Aids test). If the mother did test positive, they would have put her on medication to help lessesn the chance of the baby being infected at birth. If you feel you might have been exsposed since your last test or you were not tested at all, please let the hospital know.
rr

you have to sign a consent for HIV testing. otherwise they cannot test your child. laws are very strict regarding HIV testing and handling of HIV status information.

With my 2 kids they tested them for everything before we left the hospital. Me and my husband don't have aids or anything else , but the hospital performed all of that. I guess if you request it they would do it
