Patients 'must aid medical study'?

More patients need to allow medical students to help provide their care in order to safeguard doctors' training, researchers have said.
The Birmingham University team warned patients were increasingly refusing to allow students to carry out procedures.

Do you ever refuse a medical/healthcare student treating you? I am an AHP student and it annoys me when patients refuse - all treatments I carry out are checked by a supervisor so whats the problem?

Yes Mossy Jan, I know that. I asked if you refused student treatment.

I would rather have a nervous student than an over-confident Consultant.

as patients they have a choice and if they choose not to let a medical student carry out a procedure then thats down to them. Its their bodies and their choice.
unfortunately the students feelings or capabilities dont come into it.
No i havent, as during my three years and 3 months training as a nurse I had to rely on patients let me carry out procedures in order to gain experience so I know the importance of letting them do their training
When I trained 22 years ago I think people didnt like to refuse lol, they feel more empowered now

No I never refuse. Sometimes it can be embarrassing when more than one trainee is present but I know that they all have to learn on real people.

I'm a student nurse and it never bothers me if a patient refuses treatment from me.
It is their right to refuse and its good that more patients are refusing, it shows they know their rights.
There's still plenty of patients that will let you treat them.

i always let them have a go. we all have to learn somehow.

by all accounts most people agree

but when it is gynae it is understandable, even the researchers said that

i didn't refuse when i was having one of my babies, by all accounts i have good skin - plenty of give by all accounts and this made examining my unborn child easy - the students were nice (although there seemed to be a lot of them)

As it is one's body and one's health, people should only do what makes them comfortable.

I have severe anxiety about going to doctors and getting medical tests done. I hate it when anyone touches me.
I would NOT let medical students come near me!

I had a severe illness when I was a teenager and spent quite some time in and out of the hospital. I'm done with doctors.

Situation has not arisen yet , but would'nt worry me at all.

I've never refused, but I cherish the right to do so.

they have good reason too. let them practice on monkeys.

I was asked if a student midwife could stitch me after I had my son last year, and I had the same attitude. How are people meant to learn otherwise.
However, this particular experience did put me off - I was being stitched for 2 and a half hours, in the stirrups the whole time, and couldn't hold my baby.
After the 2 and a half hours, the supervisor gave up and took over herself - it took her 3 minutes to do what was doubtless going to take another 30.
I then caught an infection because they were so poor - the infection got into my hip joint, and I developed septic arthritis. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and nearly died coming round from the anaesthetic I needed to have two major operations to drain my hip.
I also have permanent bone damage and residual osteo-arthritis because of it all....
Needless to say this time round I am going to politely refuse if asked for a student to do it, just to be safe!

I realise my case is extremely rare though, and it is a shame that more people aren't willing to give students a chance!

No problem. They have to learn sometime and they are always supervised. I've been asked a few times and never objected.

It is a step in the right direction. I don't accept your statement that says low wage worker = slave, but then again, I have never been to Hilton Head. I do agree, that basic medical servi...
