What treatments do the EMTs or ER do for heat stroke patients?

For a medical paper.. All I can find is first aid procedures.

The key to treatment is recognizing the signs and symptoms, so you can begin treatment fast.

EMT's usually treat heat stroke in this way:
Everyone gets high flow oxygen. Support ventilations as necessary. Intubate if the patient is not protecting their airway.

*Get the temperature down. Put the patient in a cooler environment. Turn on the A/C in your rig. Remove clothing and expose the patient. Use ice packs under the arms, on the neck, along the thorax and in the groin area. Turn on a fan and spray tepid water to promote heat loss by evaporation. Do not cause the patient to shiver.

*Call for an ALS intercept or helicopter (if applicable). These patients need a high level of care and transport to an Emergency Department quickly.

*Start a large-bore IV to facilitate fluid resuscitation. These patients are generally volume depleted and are in cardiovascular collapse (shock). Initiate fluid resuscitation, starting with the initiation of 1-2 liters of LR or NS. Pulmonary edema or cerebral edema may develop second to cardiovascular collapse and loss of cardiac reserve. This is especially true in patients with CHF or other cardiopulmonary diseases.

*Place the patient on the cardiac monitor.

*Rapidly (but safely) transport the patient to the hospital while continuing to monitor the A, B, Cs and vital signs. Call the ED with report. Watch for signs of increased neurological dysfunction: seizures, posturing, etc.

Hope this helps. :-)

i had a heat stroke once and it was not enjoyable.i had convulsions and had to crawl on hands and knees to phone. had no control of balance, i really thought i was going to die.once in er they gave me something that tasted like pepto-bismal but was green. i dont know what it is called and did not care at that time. i felt weak and short or breath for a week or two and hope it never happens again.
