What can I do to help with my hearing loss?

I have limited hearing in my right ear, and Im worried that since I now play music and TV at higher volumes to hear it like normal that my left isnt too far behind. I can still hear normal conversations, but I need to pay attention to hear some whispers. I also have fluid constantly leaking out of my ear. Its been going on for years but everyone tells me its nothing and Im worried. Is there anything medically wrong with me? is it permanent? Is there any treatments out there that would help me regain some hearing and not need a hearing aid if it gets worse?

You definitely should see someone such as an Audiologist or ENT. I have a hearing loss in one ear due to otoschlerosis, so I know how frustrating a lack of hearing can be. Make sure you get an actual diagnosis before you try to treat an unnamed condition.

There is an online questioneer for testing your self for starters. The next step would be to get in touch with a speech theripist (not because of speech problems) but because they can teach you american sign language. However with hearing loss often it does affect your speech (if it gets real bad) because you cant hear your self when you speak. I would get a formal test done.

If you're worried about the hearing loss, find an audiologist and have a hearing test done. Also ask the audiologist any questions you have about hearing loss and such.

if your ear is draining fluid that indicates a chronic middle ear problem that you *must* seek treatment from an ear, nose, throat doctor. Ignoring this condition is really not a good idea because it can lead to serious complications such as total deafness and even meningitis. Once the middle ear is resolved, then it may be necessary to seek the councel of an audiologist to get hearing aids. If this has been going on for a long while, your hearing may be permanently affected. In terms of listening to to other sounds with your good ear, you need to guard its health. Be conscious of excessive levels of sound that could damage your hearing. Dont use an ipod for example.

Start with seeing an audiologist. The audiologist will give you a complete evaluation and referral if necessary to ENT or an otologist. You will need to find out what is causing the "leaking" ear. This is not normal. Once you find out what is the cause of this and your hearing loss then you can take the best road to treatment of your problem. There are many devices available to you that would help your hearing loss, but you first need to address the medical problem of the drainage before you proceed with a hearing aid fitting.
