Why is this unethical?

I have posted a few times now about not having been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD but wanting to get my hands on some Adderall to aid in focusing... getting the most bang for my buck... in dental school. I am starting in August and this is an endpoint in my education from my standpoint now. I want to specialize. It's VERY competitive. I want to learn all I can to better serve my patients. I don't want to use this drug recreationally. If Adderall can help me to focus and concentrate, thereby helping me to learn the most information in a given amount of time, to eventually better help those that come to me for treatment why in the world would people consider this unethical? Can anyone explain this to me?

If you can not see that abusing medications you do not need is unethical I do not think anyone will be able to explain it to you. Frankly, if you can not tell the difference you have no business in the medical field.

drug use to gain an advantage is unethical but not illegal

Because Adderall is an amphetamine. If you don't have a chemical inbalance that it corrects, it wouldn't help you focus. It'd help you stay awake, yes, but prevent you from focusing.

It is only helpful to those whose brains are messed up.

Their thoughts may be of a jealous nature cause they didn't think of it first! Good luck!

I answered your other posts but you didn't pay attention so I gave up......

You say that using the drug would give you an edge and help your performance. Do you support athletes using steroids? That is the same argument they use to support the use of that drug.

Does Adderall need a prescription? If it does and you do not have a prescription or you obtain a prescription under false pretenses then it is not unethical, it is illegal. If you are going to dental school then you should be learning something about how prescriptions work and the penalties for breaking the laws about them.

If you go to the Doctor and he finds that you are ADD/ADHD, you will have your hands on a medication to aid in your concentration.

Some people just think that it's drugs. They don't really care whether it hurts you or helps you. Also, they might think that it helps you too much, therefore making it unfair to others.

First thing, is that ADHD drugs dont work that well in people that dont have it. You're going to end up distracted by the side effects...like the jitters and nausea, and other issues releated to those drugs. Honest answer, dont bother, you'll be paying too much for something you can substitute. Stay with OTC stimulants. Many of the diet pills, like ripped fuel, will have the same affect. Thats all that Adderall is, a stimulant. Anyonf the diet drugs that contain ephedrine work even better, As a side note, they lifted the ban on ephedrine....but many manufacturers still dont make it. Hope that helps.

If you choose to use drugs to compete, what's wrong with athlete's using drugs to compete? Do you think that is wrong?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. There are side affects.
If you were a dental patient, would you go to a doctor you knew used drugs?
There is no "endpoint" to education. It is continuous. Learn how to learn. Throughout your life you will learn. As a medical professional, you will need to learn about new drugs, new treatments, mew procedures. Learn how to learn. Yes, i said that twice, it's twice as important as anything else I've stated.
Good luck comes from being prepared when opportunity comes. Persue your passion.

Let me know where you plan on working as a dentist when you finish school so I can stay clear of there when I have a dental emergency. I wouldn't want a doctor / dentist that abuses drugs to be the one working on me or prescribing me medications that I probably wouldn't need.

yes.

Is cheating unethical? Of course it is.

And if it ever came out that you were using it, you may as well save your money and not go to dental school because you will loose your license.

Dentists have the ability to prescribe narcotics so a very dim view is taken of them using medications that were not required and not prescribed.

Besides, it would all be a waste because the odds are it won't help you at all. It is an amphetamine which means it is a schedule II drug which means it is restricted. Have you studied the side effects?

Side effects in adults
dry mouth
loss of appetite
difficulty falling asleep
headache
weight loss

These less common side effects may occur at any age when used as prescribed.

upset stomach
nervousness
mydriasis (excessive dilation of the pupil)
urinary retention
pyrexia (fever)
tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
tics
urticaria (hives)
erectile dysfunction
increased urination
blunted affect (emotional numbness).

and note the prescribed. Adderall abuse is growing despite at least one brand being taken off the market due to links to 12 sudden deaths.

So, in answer to your question, it is unethical, it is illegal and it is downright dangerous.

If you go and get diagnosed with ADD/ADHD then you will be put on Aderall but if you just take it without having been diagnosed, you are asking for trouble. It works like speed and that would make you a druggie. If you really have the ADD/ADHD then you have no problem but something tells me you might just be wanting this because of the speed buzz you get from it. Do yourself a favor and see a doctor first.
