Animal Rescue?

I was watching animal planet over the weekend. On one of the shows it was these animal control officers in houston or something like that. I was watching it off and on so forgive me for not having every single detail. Anyway this dog was let outside and to go to the bathroom and it went into a shed/garage and bumped into a table and some caustic chemicals spilled on it. It burned the dog pretty bad and the man did not seek medical attention for the dog so he was arrested. They said that it is REQUIRED that you seek medical treatment for a dog in that situation. Im love animals and hate to see any of them suffer. The question I have is this. What happens if you are very poor? Its not like there is a Medicaid for animals. If the injuries of a dog are going to be several hundreds of dollars, how can it be required that aid be sought? If someone does meet the laws criteria but cannot pay the bill, who does?

If anyone cannot pay for treatment, most vets will put the animal to sleep either free of charge, or for a modest fee and/or consider allowing the owner to make payments. The idea is that helpless animals should not be made to suffer due to the owner's poverty and or failure to have enough funds set aside to care for the animal in the event of emergency.

Not to be mean, but if you are so poor that you cannot afford a visit to the vet's office ~ then perhaps you shouldn't be owning a pet.

Pet's are expensive. They require immunizations and routine vet care, as well as care in case of serious injury or illness so that they do not suffer. You can't just leave the poor thing to suffer. Most vets will take payments - but the owner is responsible.....if they are too poor to care for the dog they shouldn't have it in the first place.
