What Medicines/drugs from Medical Store can be use for Birds?

Actually we do not have any vet in our area, even far away. So I want to know what human medicines can be use in birds treatment. Also what things can be added in my First Aid Kit, I want to make one. I have so many Finches, 1 Pheasant, 1 Duck and now buying Parrots, Canaries and other birds.

Also appreciate if any I can make home remedies / home made medicines.

Dear friend. I was very sorry to here of your loss. I see that
phoenix had some very good information for you. Prevention
is the best cure of all. One must keep there cages very
clean and free of 'live things' at all times. Overcrowding is
often a major factor in aviary health. Sun light is a very good
disinfectant when the temperature permits. The turpentine
and the iodine that I told you about is always good to have
on hand for the things I told you about the other time. You
'can get a box of 'pickling lime'. You would find it in a store
that sales jars and tops and thing for canning things. Put
the 'pickling lime' in a pan. Place the pan in the cage so
the birds can dust themselves. The line is good to keep
'lice' off of the birds. You can tell if they have 'lice' by looking
under there wings close to the skin. Or if you see them
scratching there head with a foot like a dog they may have
lice. The lice (insects) can also be controlled by using
ceder wood shavings to litter there cages. I no longer have
chickens as I am retired from full time work. Thank you very
much for your email. I live in a small town with no pet store
around. All farming where I live. I wish you the very best
of luck with the birds as well as big profits. A friend.

Someone else on here said before that you can put a light bulb by their cage if they are sick. The heat helps them.

The first thing you need to stock is a product called "Quick-Stop".
You can find it here along with pre-made emergency kits.

http://www.naturechest.com/firstaid1.htm...

There is also suggestions for making up your own first-aid kit as well as books on emergency care for your birds. There are also other links at the bottom for further reading at other websites. I'm sure you will find everything you need here.
It's wonderful that you are thinking ahead on preparing for any emergencies. Good for you!

If you have a farm store you can find some medicines there in the poultry sections. Some of the best are Aureomycin and Terramycin. These are antibiotics that you mix into their water at the rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water.

Recommended items for a birdie first aid kit are:
1. Styptic powder to stop blood flow from nipped nails
2. Corn starch or flour for blood flow from wounds
3. Towel, to restrain the bird
4.Chamomile flowers for tea to calm a bird
5.Surgical tape and Popsicle stick for splits (NOT recommended unless a Vet cannot be obtained!!)
6. Scissors for clipping wings
7. Dog nail clippers and nail file for trimming nails
8.Heat source( chemical or microwave heating pad, heat bulb, or electric heating pad as long as you watch to be sure he does not bite the cord!)
9.Sanitizing hand gel
10.Tweezers and forceps
11.Good bird transporter-pack the kit into this container
12.100% pure Aloe gel for dry skin, burns ,wounds
13.Book on bird care with first aid section
This is probably not complete, but it is a start.

I can direct you to a yahoo group with a good library on bird health and first aid if you would like. Just E-mail me.

Good Luck

Then you might want to do a search for online vets; I don;t have any URLs rightnow since my deslsktop is in for repair. I would not use any of the stoer bought stuff as these substnces need to be titred for your bird's species and weight and general health and any specific problems it may have. That is a shame that you don;t have a vet that can care for them. There are soem excelent groups at Yahoo online; maybe you can try one or two of them? CHer (BIRDWISE)
