Could TB be erradicated with $32 million a year? |
I was reading the HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Issue at http://www.one.org/aids_poverty/ and the numbers are: 2 million TB deaths a year and $16 per person for the full treatment with an 80% success rate. You can actually treat TB, and eradicate it from individuals. One major problem in completely getting rid of the disease is that many animals are natural resevoir hosts for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. I say complex because there are many genetically similar strains which may or may not be different species. Going back to the animals; many of the animals are livestock and in poorer nations still live in close association with families. I really think they are gearing this towards poor countries like Africa. I could be wrong on that. One thing you are missing, there is no cure for TB. $32 million does not cure it, it only treats your symptoms. Once you have contracted TB, you will always have it. It will either be active or non active. Good question. |
