What is the point?

what is the point of getting chemo for cancer if your just going to die within a year anyway..i'd rather just say **** it and die i mean really when you think about u will come to know that it really dont make no sense to get chemotherapy when u are only going to live a couple months anyway.......you dont even stand a chance even with chemo and yes i know nobody lives forever but i just in my opinion if i had cancer i would just await my death as destined without the useless chemo.shoot for all of that i'd rather have AIDS.......cause cancer kills you faster even with treatment.if u have cancer and u are getting chemo it only adds what lets see.....4 months to your life so really it dont make a diff whether u use it or wait to die what the hell.
at least if u have AIDS and u take medicine u can ....i heard u can live at least another 25 to 30 years with it b4 u die(if on haart treatment)or what ever the name of the meds are called.if u had cancer would u take chemo or just wait ?

Obviously you have not looked into chemotherapy as much as you should before passing judgement on its benefits. It is true, however, that SOME chemotherapy can only lengthen a person's life for a few months. It ALWAYS depends on the type of cancer, the extent of the cancer, and the treatment that is needed. There are a LOT of people that live with cancer for several years, even lifetimes. This is DUE TO their treatments with chemotherapy. If a person choses not to do chemotherapy, they will die. And this is not to say that if they do the chemo they will not die. However, at least the chemo gives them a chance. Without it, they do not have one. The decision to have chemo is a very hard one, and the pros and cons should be discussed with an Oncologist before deciding one way or the other. It is understandable, in some cancers, to chose not to have chemotherapy. I wouldn't want to spend the last moments of my life more sick than I have to be. But in MOST cases, chemo will benefit the patient. They are coming out with new medications every day. The research for cancer never ends. There are a lot of medications that can even make a person's cancer more bearable. And believe it or not, 4 more months to your life seems like a blessing, when you are going to die. It makes a big difference to a lot of people. I will tell you what, if I ever get cancer, I will be taking chemotherapy if it is an option to me. My life is precious to me. Even a small amount of time is worth it to be able to say good-bye.

I believe in free choice. Some people are fighters and want to fight to the bitter end. Others are willing to accept the inevitable. I think everybody should be able to choose their own ending. And it shouldn't depend on what there chances of survival are. I agree with you surviving another 4 months is pointless unless you need it to tie up loose ends. My Aunt has cancer and she decided to die from it and not seek treatment. She is very old and of sound mind but she see no point in taking a treatment to prolong her life. She has to die sometime she figures and now is as good as any.

I think it should have to do with the quality of life remaining, as well as your support system. Nobody wants to be a burden on their family, but from the family's point of view, it's much different. You'll do anything you can to make your partner or loved ones life comfortable and meaningful for as long as you can, and glad to be able to help and to have them around.

Don't know what kind of cancer you might have, or where it is. I think if the doctor didn't think it would be beneficial he wouldn't offer the treatment. A person can give up and just quit, or by keeping a positive attitude and finding a support group may be able to have a much longer time to stick around.

I was surprised that a man was going for radiation treatments after his lung cancer had spread to the brain, but it was recommended, because it would lessen the headaches he was having. Why not give the chemo a chance?

Also, some cancers are Very slow growing. They're learning more every day, and I wouldn't give up just because of the diagnosis. You should also get a second opinion. They put erasers on pencils, so there could be a mistake - Keep your chin up, and decide you're going to beat it! Best luck!

Well, not everyone with cancer is destined to die. I had cancer just last year and chemo and radiation therapy is what got me better! Of course, some people have rare cancers that don't have a large percentage of being cured. If you are told that you don't have a big chance surviving the cancer, than not taking the chemo would be something to think about b/c you would probably want to end your life happy, not in chemo. But if I ever have cancer again, I would definitley take the chemo.

Chemo is a treatment for cancer. It does not kill you. All types of cancer react differently to chemo. It also depends on the persons immune system before starting chemo. My sister was diagnosed with renal cell (kidney) cancer in 1998 and is still fighting with it to this day. She has been on chemo for about 4 years and it has actually been able to shrink the size of some of her tumors as well as slow down the growth of others. Chemo isn't recommended for all cancer sufferers and the fact is that there is NO cure. This treatment does help some people live longer lives. Before you go and dispute people's healthcare choices, I would advise doing a little research. Go to this website www.chemotherapy.com, do a little research and then if you still disagree with chemo, at least now you will have a good valid argument to back you up.

I have brain cancer and I understand the question all too well.

I called it quality vs quantity. Except mine is with radiation and surgery. I've had the radiation therapy and I was fighting it the entire way. I gave in because my husband wanted me to have it. In the 11 years since then, I have gone downhill. I have no energy, have to bank energy when I get it and am more susceptible to germs. I can't work and I can't fly to see family that live on the west coast. I can only fly less than 3 hours at a time.

I rather would have had quality of life than quantity. Sometimes you have to ask, "what price your soul".

Chemotherapy kills the cancer cells but kills also the good cells. Because of this, the patient becomes very weak as the good cells where the body derives the immune system are jeopardized.

I had a sister died of cancer even if she was undergoing chemotherapy. First, as a breast cancer, then metastasized to the bones. She became very thin, then died...

My hope didn't stop with her death. I discovered the real solution... called ganotherapy. I wont allow ANY disease to take over my family's health because of ignorance! Learn more by visiting this web page and navigate through other pages of the site...

I've been through the treatment once. If it comes back I wouldn't go through chemo again.

I have cancer, and I've had 4 rounds of chem. I'm in remission and have been for almost 2 yrs. When I was diagnosed, I really didn't want to undergo chemo either. I wanted to let nature take its course. My children talked me into it, and I'm glad they did. I've had the opportunity to form good adult relationships with both of them. I may or I may not undergo the next round.

I was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and I'm still here. When I was debating the issues that you bring up, I couldn't help but thinking about my two young children and how I wanted to do all of the things for them that a healthy mother would do. I couldn't bear the thought of allowing this experience to jeopardize their well being. The way that you feel about treatment has to do with your life itself. No two people are the same. Today, I am cancer free. I'm glad I took the steps to combat the disease. I even returned to college and received an advanced degree. I now have two happy, healthy children in college, a good relationship with my husband, and a career.
