Shouldn't we have a cure for most deadly diseases?

Is it true that most companies don't put as much recources into finding cures for aids and other diseases because a lifetime of treatment is more profitable than a one time cure?

Actually drug companies don't have a responsibility to the patients. But they have a single responsibility to its share holders; to increase the profits. Unfortunately, they are companies trying to make money. They want to be well, but they don't want to give you a pill that will cure you. They want you to take the pill for the rest of your life so they can make money while you can be disease-free. For AIDS, we don't have a single pill that can make you well. But we have a so-called "cocktail", which is a combination of a dozen or so of pills, that you have to take for the rest of your life.

Many diseases are self-inflicted, or are the result of bad behavior. The cure is in prevention and with people doing less risky behaviors.

It's really not that simple, you cant just pay lots of money and have the miracle cure... trust me, it would have been done many times over. Finding the cure for something takes lots of time, patience, and experance.

No, most companies dont put many resources into finding cures because most companies dont fund grants like that.

A cure for AIDS is being worked on in research labs all over the world. My daughter does research and she explained to me that with HIV, the problem is that the virus mutates so frequently that by the time they find something to kill the present virus, it has mutated.
When I think about the common cold, though, I DO think that there is a conspiracy to NOT find a cure because of the profits that the drug companies make. But that's just my opinion.

I doubt it. You have no idea how hard it would be to develop a true cure for AIDS. That virus is seriously tricky.

Not really...a lot of reasearch is going into finding a vaccine for HIV...its a tough one to beat. If anything, there is intense competition between companies to be the first to develop a vaccine or maybe even a 'cure'. Whoever gets there first will rake in billions.

Why wouldn't companies want to much as much resources into a deadly disease as any other disease? For sure, if there was a cure for AIDS and if they had an idea about it, they would do it because of the profit they would make! AIDS is all over the world and I'm sure if a cure is found then there will be lots of money made too. So, it's not the resources that matter for sure.

Talking about AIDS as the disease, it's just that the virus is complicated and has not been understood to that level of finding a cure for it!

A one time cure could be charged more than a lifetime treatment, from an economic standpoint and it would also provide a unique, unparalleled advantage to a single company.

A cure for XYZ common disease would be enough to make any pharmaceutical company obscenely rich because it would wipe out competition. Instead of EXPECTING people to keep taking your drug (and not switching to another company's drug) you simply sell them the cure once and for all. No competition, no problem.

The MOST important reason why efficient treatments are not always being pursued is because some diseases are rare or only concern third world countries that are unable to pay for expensive medications (e.g. malaria or worm infections are VERY common but people suffering from those are not likely to afford an expensive treatment).

Finally, please consider the fact that some diseases are simply put very difficult to treat. Despite the promise of a Nobel prize and riches beyond imagination, a cure is not easy to discover. There are many people outside the business world (universities and non-profit institutions) and none of those would ever dream of hiding an important discovery. After all, being a scientist is like being a pop star. You need to communicate your work, otherwise it doesn't exist.
