Is this trush, and if so how dire is treatment?

Obviously, being a Saturday my Dr's office is closed. I'm curious if my daughter has a bit of thrush in her mouth.

Difficult without a photo to aid. . But I will try my best to explain.

On her tongue it's a BIT white, can't seem to remove it.

I'm curious also how thrush is acquired? Is it urgent to treat, or can I wait or even still can I treat at home?

All of us have yeast on our skin and in our digestive tract at all times. It is in the air, and its in our food. There is no problem with having yeast. The problem is that sometimes it overgrows, usually when the immune system has been weakened, or by eating a lot of sugar, etc.

Generally thrush (oral yeast) isn't a big deal. It can be nearly impossible to get rid of because its hard to fix the underlying problem that is allowing yeast to overgrow.

There is no urgency to treatment unless it is causing pain/difficulty eating. Yeast overgrowth can also cause excess gas and spitting up in babies.

If you want to treat it at home you can rub a mild vinegar solution in the mouth and on your nipples (if breastfeeding) after each feed. You can also purchase Grapefruit Seed Extract which is far more effective and also safe.

Genetial violet is often touted as a natural treatment, it is not and it has risks.

that sounds like thrush. I had it with my first daughter. I treated it with gention violet...I bought it at walmart. Also try taking acidolphous pills like azo yeast to prevent it from next time. Good luck

ps the violet willturn their mouth purple, but it is a natural and effective way to cure it. That is all I used and my thrush went away in two weeks.

If you suspect it, consult the doctor promptly for diagnosis and treatment. If there is delay in getting medical advice, it is helpful to have the baby drink half an ounce of boiled water that has been allowed to cool, or suck it from a piece of sterile absorbent cotton, after the milk. This washes the milk out of the mouth and gives the thrush fungus less to live on.

Thrush looks as if patches of milk scum were stuck to the cheeks and tongue and roof of the mouth, but unlike scum, it does not wipe off easily. If you do rub it off, the underlying skin bleeds slightly and looks inflamed. Thrush usually makes babies' mouths sore. They show the discomfort when they are trying to nurse

Treatment of Thrush In Babies
If the baby seems to have a sore mouth or is uncomfortable feeding, check the mouth for thrush. The yeast grows in the baby's mouth and is apparent on the cheeks and tongue, and later on the roof of the mouth.
Treatment consists of coating the baby's mouth with a medicine such as nystatin suspension or miconazole of clotrimazole gels three to four times a day for five to seven days. Mothers with symptoms of yeast infections should be treated in their last three months of pregnancy.
In the rare case where this treatment fails, a single dose of the oral fungicide Diflucan can be used.
Thrush is easy to treat and is harmless if treated properly.
Thrush found in the mouth of children over 6 months of age may indicate an immune deficiency, and should be checked by a physician

Also try taking a wet washcloth and gentle rubbing on the tongue after each feeding.

Thrush is a fungal infection. I had it often as a baby. I'm not really sure why babies get it. I had it last year following a course of antibiotic use. The dentist said I got it because antibiotics kill ALL bacteria, even the "good" bacteria in your mouth that are there to kill germs (fungus). She does need to see a doctor to make sure thrush is indeed what she has. I don't know how many months old she is, but sometimes thrush can be cured by eating yogurt.

i can't find the site but from what i've read thrush patches usually show up on the inner cheeks or gums before the tongue.

In infants

Symptoms of thrush in an infant may include:

* White patches inside the mouth and on the tongue that look like cottage cheese or milk curds. Thrush is often mistaken for milk or formula. The patches adhere to the mouth and tongue and cannot be easily wiped away. When rubbed, the patches may bleed.
* A sore mouth and tongue and/or difficulty swallowing.
* Poor appetite. The infant may refuse to eat, which can be mistaken for lack of hunger or poor milk supply. If the infant is unable to eat because of a sore mouth or throat, he or she may act fussy.
* Diaper rash. Diaper rash may develop because the fungus that causes thrush will be in the baby's stool.
