Mislead During Treatment?

I need your help. I am a 30 year old man that was just told by
a new physician that I am legally blind. I under went 3 major surgeries in TN and was relased to return to work. I was never told to look into
disability or legaly blindness until yesterday at the doctors office. If I had
been aware that I would be in this position I would have prepared for it.
Today, I have no job or finances to aid me while I wait for a disability
decision. I need your direction and advice. Thank you

I suffer from a disease called diabetic retinotjrophy, and eye disease that affects diabetics. After the surgery I was release to return to work even though I stated I was unable to see. I was never told by the physician that I should began to look into disability.

I recommend contacting the National Federation for the Blind, American Council for the Blind or your local Rehabilitaion services through your state or local Independent living center. I will look up the NFB number for you later.

I am not a lawyer but have done advocacy work so please take this all with a grain of salt. My guesses are that your best bets to get financial compensation of some sort before disability goes through is in how and why you do not have a job. You maybe eliigble for some sort of unemployment compensation. You may have been wrongfully terminated. There may be some ways independent of the doctor side of things to be compensated.

I think the legal end through the doctors not being truthful with you will be harder to prove. To start that ball in motion you will should to speak with an attorney and you should get copies of your medical records. You can get copies of your records now. I would not tell the doctor's office why. I would just say you need them for records or for a second opinion or something like that. Did the doctors tell you that your sight would be restored to be able to continue your type of employment?

I know many legally blind people who work and have good professional jobs so please be encouraged by this. Your state maybe able to help you purchase adaptive talking equipment and other things.
