What is the treatment to prevent AIDS spreading from mother to child? The best way is to use medication to lower the mother's viral load. The chance spreading from mother to child if mother isn't on medication is 25%. The chance if the mother's viral load is undetectable is less than 2%. The medications used to lower the mother's viral load are called antiretroviral agents. The most common antiretroviral agents used for this purpose are Zidovudine, Efavirenz and Nevirapine. These agents are also given during birth and to the newborn to help prevent transmission.
