Is it possible for a basic nucleic acid to be a wonder drug for the treatment of AIDS?

I suppose it depends on how you define a wonder drug. Many antiviral drugs including most anti-HIV drugs are nucleotide or nucleoside derivatives. The first such drug to come into use, AZT, was known as an inhibitor of DNA synthesis before HIV was discovered. AZT and related nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors remain an important part of multidrug regimens, and as such have helped prolong the lives of those infected with HIV by years or decades.

As far as a wonder drug that will cure AIDS or make its treatment better yet - I think we've got about all we can out of this class of drugs based on nucleosides, though. Short version: a basic component of nucleic acids, modified somewhat, has already been a wonder drug - but is unlikely to be the basis for a future wonder drug. A drug acting by a different mechanism is probably what will be important. So far, ALL of these drugs are ineffective unless used in combination with other anti-HIV drugs due to the rapid emergence of resistance in the absence of such a combination.
