Yes actually I remember reading about the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation... (I couldn't remember all the details but here's what I found)

The Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a $100 million initiative to help slow the spread of AIDS in India. The initiative will expand prevention efforts in the country, combat the social stigma surrounding the disease, and increase awareness of and leadership on HIV/AIDS issues.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced the effort in New Delhi at the start of his tour of India to learn about the AIDS effort there and to meet with Indian officials. Shri Shatrughan Sinha, India's minister for Health and Family Welfare, will chair the board of the India AIDS Initiative, which will include two other government officials. Ashok Alexander has been named director of the initiative and will work closely with the country's central and state governments, NGOs, and the private sector to coordinate its activities.

"HIV/AIDS is at a relatively low level in India, and experience shows that countries that act at an early stage can prevent the disease from becoming widespread," said Gates. "The India AIDS Initiative marks a long-term commitment by the foundation to support India's effort to contain further spread of the disease."

Although Gates, who is scheduled to meet with Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his tour of the country, emphasized that the initiative will complement the Indian government's existing National AIDS Control Program, the Associated Press reports that he has stepped into a controversy concerning the scale of India's AIDS problem. Government officials and local AIDS activists have rejected a U.S. report cited by Gates that forecasts the number of people with HIV in India to rise from 4 million to about 25 million by 2010. And while the Indian government hasn't provided its own projections, officials say they are not anticipating such a dramatic increase and maintain that their prevention programs are effectively containing the disease.

yes, actually synthesis of a new vaccine for AIDS has already started in India at AIIMS, New Delhi..There , the head of Dept. of Microbiology, Dr. Pradeep Seth is working on it...The vaccine is under trials n is yet to be tested on humans..And hopefully if the human trials become successful , then india will be the first country to have AIDS vaccine...Something to feel proud of..!! nowadays chemotherapy is available against AIDS at leading hospitals in India..
