New antiretroviral treatment for AIDS? |
I read somewhere that there was a new treatment for AIDS. Not a cure, but a treatment. This is a subject I'm interested in, so I'm wondering if anyone has input as to what the treatment is/how it functions? The two newest types of AIDS drugs offer new mechanisms for treatment for people with advanced HIV or AIDS who have not responded to other medications. One class of drugs, called CCR5 (chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 5) blockers, works by interfering with the interaction between CCR5 and HIV - CCR5 is the major co-receptor through which HIV infects cells. These include Maraviroc (Pfizer) and experimental drugs PRO140 (Progenics), Vicriviroc (Schering Plough), and Aplaviroc (GlaxoSmithKline). |
