By providing aid in times of disaster, have we not sealed our own doom?

Please no knee jerk reactions, I know the people can not help what rotten governments they have but think about. The 13 colonies rose up and fought against the British Empire because they got sick of the unjust treatment that they received form the King of England. Unfair taxes, unfair laws, restraints on their freedoms etc. So eventually the people rose up, fought, whooped and won. And out of it came the United States.

Today, we have a different policy. We take a nation such as Myanmar who鈥檚 Government is as rotten as they come. They refuse to let aid in to the people who have been devastated by this cyclone. Now they are saying they will take our money, our food, our provisions, but we are not welcome.

Is this not backwards? I know you will say it鈥檚 not fair to make those who have suffered, suffer even more. But how will this really help? The sick and dying will die. The aid we send will be given at some point by the dictators and it will once again help keep them in power.

Would it not be better in the long run, to force the issue? Let the people know we are with them, but their own government will not let the aid in. Then and only then when the people realize that if they want helped, they must do it for themselves, and then they would rise up and get rid of those who would hold them down.

And Myanmar is just one example, how many others dictatorships have we helped stay in power by putting a Band-Aid on the sick, instead of allowing the sick to get the cure?

Think about it, would the colonies have ever revolted if some 鈥榟elper鈥?had came and gave just enough help to get them through each time the times got rough?

it is the balance between "enabling" a bad government, against human misery involved in letting it sink on it's own; I think that it is ultimately the same question regarding the "mixed" socialist patterns in this country; reality is a tougher thing to sort out than theory.
I'm pretty sure that i am misquoting but there was a Trotsky quote that went something like "the sooner it gets worse, the quicker it will get better" and that cuts in several directions

So you want to give aid at the point of a gun? There is something fundamentally wrong with that concept. We can only do what they will allow us to do. We have no right to circumvent their gov't.
