My pug puppy has a kennel cough. What are the treatments? Recommended Cough syrup for her?

Hi my pug has a kennel cough. You think infant vitamins and infant cough syrup can help aid the cough. Myvet told me to give him lots of water. But then, he was still not well.

When my shih tzu puppy had kennel cough he was prescribed clavamox and then I gave pediacare infant cough syrup...Using the dropper bottle I gave a quarter to a half of the dropper full every 4 to 6 hours. Good Luck...it is the saddest thing to here you dog hacking and wheezing...

Actually "kennel cough" is similar to the viruses humans catch most commonly the adenovirus or para-influenza. In fact the antibiotics given to animals for kennel cough is also prescribed to humans for upper respiratory bacterial infections. This I know for sure as I am a nurse practitioner and my dog had kennel cough and was given doxycycline (an antibiotic). That being said it would not hurt to give your pet some honey on a small piece of bread or cough drops to help ease the cough associated with irritation of the throat that causes the pet to cough especially if the pet is having a hard time resting. Also the best way to assist your pet in overcoming the infection is to boost their immune system by giving them chewable vit. C tablets. I would suggest that you most importantly take your pug back to the vet and insist on a more thorough check up and some antibiotics. Kennel cough can progress to Bordatella or pneumonia which can be fatal to your pup.

My puppy also caught kennel cough a while ago. I brought her to the vet and she was put on a general antibiotic for about 2 weeks. Obviously keeping your pug in a warmer spot to sleep in will help.

I am surprised your vet did not give him any antibiotics. Generally your dog won't get better unless he gets treated with antibiotics. Also keep him away from other dogs as its very infectious.

um NO!! Kennel cough is not like the common cold humans get! Its very simple to cure, but it needs vet treatment! Most of my cats, whenever they had kennel cough, received a shot of antiobiotics at the vet, and that was it, 3-4 days and it was gone. But vets also give out pills to treat it. Either way, your dog needs DOG medication to cure its DOG sickness!!

Put that pup on antibiotics ASAP.
