Spain used troops and missionaries to conquor and exploit the existing natives, not send over large groups of settlers to grow and expand.

England created "corporations" to fund colonies and used troops to protect the "corporate" investments.

While there were certain similaries, that mentioned above is the fundamental difference too me.
